{"id":139397,"date":"2026-04-30T04:02:54","date_gmt":"2026-04-30T04:02:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/who-chief-says-u-s-withdrawal-requires\/"},"modified":"2026-04-30T04:02:54","modified_gmt":"2026-04-30T04:02:54","slug":"who-chief-says-u-s-withdrawal-requires","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/who-chief-says-u-s-withdrawal-requires\/","title":{"rendered":"WHO chief says U.S. withdrawal requires"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>GENEVA, Apr 30 \u2013  The United States has yet to settle its outstanding membership dues to the World Health Organization (WHO), the agency\u2019s chief said on Wednesday, noting that payment remains a condition for Washington\u2019s planned withdrawal.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the UN health body, expressed hope that the United States could clear its arrears before completing its exit \u2014 a requirement set by Washington itself.<\/p>\n<p>While answering relevant questions at a press briefing hosted by the Association of Correspondents Accredited to the UN, Tedros outlined the two conditions for withdrawal: a one-year notice period and full payment of outstanding dues.<\/p>\n<p>On his first day back in office in January 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump submitted a one-year notice of withdrawal from the WHO.<\/p>\n<p>The United States has historically been the organization\u2019s largest contributor. However, Tedros said there have been \u201cno signals\u201d that Washington intends to settle its dues.<\/p>\n<p>He stressed that the issue extends beyond finances. \u201cTo be honest, it\u2019s not about the money,\u201d he said. \u201cThe issue is health security needs universality, and the United States, by withdrawing, makes itself unsafe and makes the rest of the world unsafe. So it\u2019s lose-lose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo our focus is not on the money.
