{"id":139976,"date":"2026-05-06T07:03:02","date_gmt":"2026-05-06T07:03:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/oil-prices-ease-as-us-pauses-project-freedom-to-seek-deal-with-iran\/"},"modified":"2026-05-06T07:03:02","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T07:03:02","slug":"oil-prices-ease-as-us-pauses-project-freedom-to-seek-deal-with-iran","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/oil-prices-ease-as-us-pauses-project-freedom-to-seek-deal-with-iran\/","title":{"rendered":"Oil prices ease as US pauses Project Freedom to seek deal with Iran"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Oil prices edged lower in Wednesday trade in Asia after US President Donald Trump raised hopes for an agreement with Iran to end the war.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Trump said the US would pause its operation to guide ships through the key Strait of Hormuz trade route \u2013 a move that triggered an escalation in attacks in the region \u2013 to see if a deal could be made.<\/p>\n<p>Brent, the global benchmark for crude, fell by 1.7% to $108 (\u00a379.56) a barrel, while US-traded oil fell by 1.6% to $100.60.<\/p>\n<p>The price of oil jumped by more than 6% earlier in the week as attacks across the Middle East intensified, but has since gradually eased.<\/p>\n<p>Global energy prices have surged since Tehran threatened to attack ships trying cross the Strait of Hormuz, in retaliation against US-Israeli strikes since 28 February.<\/p>\n<p>About a fifth of global oil and gas shipments cross the strait.<\/p>\n<p>Oil prices overall have been higher since the US-Iran conditional ceasefire, which was announced on 8 April and later extended.<\/p>\n<p>Trump said on social media on Tuesday that Project Freedom, the name of the US-led effort to move ships through the channel, would be \u201cpaused for a short period of time to see whether or not the Agreement can be finalized and signed\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He added that \u201cGreat Progress has been made toward a Complete and Final Agreement with Representatives of Iran\u201d. Trump said the US would continue to block ships transiting to and from Iranian ports \u2013 a move designed to put pressure on Iran\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n<p>To traders, pausing Project Freedom is \u201ca sign that Washington is willing to give diplomacy another chance,\u201d said Charu Chanana from investment firm Saxo.<\/p>\n<p>She added, however, that it is not a turning point.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe key question for oil traders is whether this leads to real progress in reopening trade through the Strait of Hormuz,\u201d said Chanana, an investment strategist. \u201cFor now, there is little evidence of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also told reporters that the initial US-Israeli offensive in Iran was over, as Washington\u2019s objectives had been met.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe would prefer the path of peace. What the president would prefer is a deal,\u201d Rubio said.<\/p>\n<p>Iran has not responded to Rubio\u2019s remarks.
