WASHINGTON D.C., United States, May 8 \u2014 US President Donald Trump says a ceasefire is still in place between the US and Iran after both sides exchanged fire late on Thursday night. It was unclear who fired first.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s top military command alleged the US had targeted an Iranian oil tanker and another vessel approaching the Strait of Hormuz and carried out \u201caerial attacks\u201d on several coastal areas.<\/p>\n

The US, meanwhile, said it responded to Iranian attacks on US Navy guided-missile destroyers in the Strait with \u201cself-defence strikes\u201d. Trump said Iran \u201ctrifled with us today\u201d.<\/p>\n

The flare-up comes a day after Iran\u2019s foreign ministry had said it was considering a US proposal to end the war.<\/p>\n

Iranian state media initially reported \u201cexplosions\u201d in the Strait of Hormuz, describing them as an \u201cexchange of fire\u201d with the \u201cenemy\u201d. Meanwhile, local media reported explosions were heard in Tehran.<\/p>\n

Not long after, a statement from Iran\u2019s top military command said US \u201caerial attacks\u201d struck the coasts of Bandar Khamir, Sirik and Qeshm Island.<\/p>\n

It said it responded immediately by attacking US military vessels, inflicting \u201csignificant damage\u201d, and accused the US of a \u201cviolation of the ceasefire\u201d.<\/p>\n

US Central Command (Centcom) described the Iranian attacks as \u201cunprovoked\u201d, saying Iranian forces launched \u201cmultiple missiles, drones and small boats\u201d as US Navy guided-missile destroyers transited through the strait.<\/p>\n

Centcom said it had \u201celiminated inbound threats and targeted Iranian military facilities responsible for attacking US forces, including missile and drone launch sites; command and control locations; and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance nodes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCentcom does not seek escalation but remains positioned and ready to protect American forces,\u201d the statement continued.<\/p>\n

Posting on Truth Social, Trump said that the US had destroyed multiple small boats that \u201cdropped ever so beautifully down to the Ocean, very much like a butterfly dropping to its grave!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGreat damage\u201d was \u201cdone to the Iranian attackers,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n

The US president also reiterated a warning over the peace deal: \u201cJust like we knocked them out again today, we\u2019ll knock them out a lot harder, and a lot more violently, in the future, if they don\u2019t get their Deal signed, FAST!\u201d<\/p>\n

An Israeli source told the BBC there was \u201cno Israeli involvement\u201d in the latest attacks.<\/p>\n

The increase in tensions comes despite the US president saying in recent days that the war in Iran will be \u201cover quickly\u201d.<\/p>\n

US news outlet Axios had said that the White House believes it could be closing in on a\u00a014-point memorandum of understanding with Iran<\/a>, which could set a framework for more detailed nuclear negotiations.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, an Iranian foreign ministry spokesman said the latest US proposal was being considered and that Tehran would share its views with Pakistani mediators.<\/p>\n

Pakistan\u2019s foreign minister said his country was \u201cendeavouring to convert this ceasefire into a permanent end to this war\u201d.<\/p>\n

But a senior member of Iran\u2019s parliament has dismissed the 14-point memorandum of understanding as a \u201cwish list\u201d.<\/p>\n

Both the US and Iran have threatened an escalation in violence if their respective conditions for a peace deal aren\u2019t met.<\/p>\n

In a Truth Social post on 6 May, Trump wrote that if Iran did not agree to a deal \u201cthe bombing starts, and it will be, sadly, at a much higher level and intensity than it was before\u201d.<\/p>\n

A short while later, the spokesperson of the Iranian parliament\u2019s national security and foreign policy commission, Ebrahim Rezaei, wrote on X that Iran \u201chas its finger on the trigger\u201d, warning Iran would \u201cdeliver a harsh and regret-inducing response\u201d if the US did not \u201csurrender and grant necessary conditions\u201d.<\/p>\n

Trump had previously said Operation Epic Fury \u2013 the initial US-Israeli offensive in Iran \u2013 would come to an end \u201cassuming Iran agrees to give what has been agreed to\u201d. Prior to this statement, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had said the operation was over and had achieved its objectives.<\/p>\n

Trump also said, not for the first time, that Iran had agreed to never have a nuclear weapon \u201camong other things\u201d \u2013 a claim that has not been confirmed by Tehran.
