NAIROBI,Kenya June 19 \u2013 Several people were injured on Friday after supporters of Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika and Kuresoi North MP Alfred Mutai allegedly clashed during a Youth and Women Empowerment Programme in Nyota Ward, Kuresoi North.<\/p>\n
The violence erupted at Tulwet Primary School, where the empowerment event had been organised and was expected to be attended by leaders allied to Governor Kihika.<\/p>\n
Witnesses said tensions flared shortly after MP Mutai arrived at the venue accompanied by a group of supporters, sparking confrontations with residents and attendees.<\/p>\n
Videos and photographs seen by the Daily Nation showed chaotic scenes as groups of youths engaged in running battles, forcing the event to be called off prematurely.<\/p>\n
Residents claimed that gunshots were fired during the confrontation, leaving at least three people injured. However, the circumstances surrounding the alleged shooting could not be independently verified by the time of publication.<\/p>\n
Some residents were heard chanting slogans against the legislator, while others voiced support for Governor Kihika amid the heated exchanges.<\/p>\n
A welfare bus belonging to residents from Ngata was also set ablaze during the unrest. Rival groups traded blame over the incident, with supporters of the governor accusing the MP\u2019s allies of disrupting the empowerment programme.<\/p>\n
Despite the violence, some residents maintained that they had sought to protect a community initiative from disruption and called for peace, order and respect for development programmes in the area.<\/p>\n
