The head of the global nuclear watchdog has said it will carry out inspections in Iran under the country\u2019s preliminary peace agreement with the US.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThe inspections will indeed take place,\u201d International Atomic Energy Agency director general Rafael Grossi told reporters in Japan. \u201cWe will be working on the modalities \u2013 dates, procedures, places-very soon.\u201d<\/p>\n

The agreement signed last week said \u201cexplicitly\u201d that the dilution of Iran\u2019s highly enriched uranium would be carried out under IAEA supervision, he added.<\/p>\n

However, Iran\u2019s deputy foreign minister said access to its damaged nuclear facilities and nuclear material would only be addressed within the framework of a final deal with the US.<\/p>\n

Grossi\u2019s comments come as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is visiting Gulf nations to discuss the deal. On Wednesday he met UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and is due to travel to Kuwait and Bahrain.<\/p>\n

The initial US-Iran agreement also said that Iran would allow shipping to pass through the Strait of Hormuz while the US would lift a naval blockade on Iranian ports.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday the price of Brent crude oil fell to below $75 (\u00a357) for first time since the US-Israeli war on Iran began.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile the UN said some ships had already passed through the strait under a scheme to evacuate thousands of sailor stranded by the war.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

In recent days, there has been a dispute between the US and Iran over the issue of UN nuclear inspectors visiting sites in the country.<\/p>\n

On Monday, following talks in Switzerland with Iran\u2019s chief negotiator, US Vice-President JD Vance said Iran had \u201cagreed to invite IAEA inspectors back into their country\u201d.<\/p>\n

The next day, Iranian foreign ministry spokesman said there had been \u201cno detailed discussions\u201d and that Iran had no plans to grant IAEA inspectors access to nuclear facilities which were bombed by the US during a 12-day war between Israel and Iran in June 2025.<\/p>\n

US President Donald Trump then dismissed Iran\u2019s \u201cprotestations and false statements to the contrary\u201d, saying the country had \u201cfully and completely agreed\u201d to inspections.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a war or words here. Some say \u2018yes\u2019, the others say \u2018no\u2019,\u201d the IAEA\u2019s chief said on Wednesday. \u201cI can understand political statements. They are part of the reality.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut the fundamental thing\u2026 is that there has been a memorandum of understanding signed by both presidents,\u201d he added. \u201c[It] says explicitly that the nuclear activities that are going to be carried out, with regards to nuclear material, facilities, will be supervised by the IAEA, in bold letters. This is going to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grossi said the inspections would take place in collaboration and co-operation with the Iranian government. \u201cWhether this happens the day after tomorrow, or in one week, or in 10 days, it\u2019s important but not essential.\u201d<\/p>\n

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi appeared to push back at the comments.<\/p>\n

He wrote on X that access to Iran\u2019s damaged nuclear facilities and its nuclear materials would only be addressed within the framework of a final agreement with the US and after practical steps had been taken to lift all sanctions.<\/p>\n

\u201cMedia noise cannot be used to impose facts on the ground,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Under the 14-point memorandum of understanding, the US and Iran have committed to negotiating a final deal within 60 days.<\/p>\n

It says they have \u201cagreed to resolve the disposition of stockpiled enriched material, pursuant to a mechanism that will be mutually agreed upon\u2026 with the minimum methodology to be down-blending on site under the supervision of the IAEA\u201d.<\/p>\n

The IAEA said in a recent report that its inspectors were allowed to visit Iran\u2019s Bushehr nuclear power plant earlier this month, but that they were still not given access to the sensitive nuclear facilities that were bombed last June.<\/p>\n

The watchdog said that meant it could not provide any information on the current size, composition or whereabouts of Iran\u2019s stockpile of enriched uranium, or whether Iran had suspended all enrichment activities. Much of the stockpile is believed to be inside underground tunnels at the Isfahan site.<\/p>\n

Enriched uranium can be used to make reactor fuel but also nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n

Before the start of the US-Israeli war with Iran on 28 February, the IAEA reported that Iran had 440kg (970 lbs) of uranium that was enriched up to 60% purity, which is near weapons grade. That would theoretically be enough, if enriched to 90%, for as many as 10 bombs.<\/p>\n

Iran insists its nuclear activities are entirely peaceful and that it would never seek to develop or acquire nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n

Under a 2015 deal with the US and five other world powers, Iran agreed to limit its nuclear activities and allow continuous and robust monitoring by the IAEA\u2019s inspectors in return for relief from crippling economic sanctions.<\/p>\n

However, Trump abandoned the agreement during his first term in 2018, saying it did too little to stop a pathway to a bomb, and reinstated US sanctions.<\/p>\n

Iran retaliated by increasingly breaching the restrictions of the deal, particularly those relating to uranium enrichment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
