{"id":145069,"date":"2026-06-28T04:02:46","date_gmt":"2026-06-28T04:02:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/unclean-cooking-energy-linked-to-high-respiratory-diseases-in-siaya\/"},"modified":"2026-06-28T04:02:46","modified_gmt":"2026-06-28T04:02:46","slug":"unclean-cooking-energy-linked-to-high-respiratory-diseases-in-siaya","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/unclean-cooking-energy-linked-to-high-respiratory-diseases-in-siaya\/","title":{"rendered":"Unclean cooking energy linked to high respiratory diseases in Siaya"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"zlAe0W_TextBase zlAe0W_Text\">Over 75 per cent of the respiratory disease burden in Siaya County affects children under the age of five.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zlAe0W_TextBase zlAe0W_Text\">According to the <span class=\"zlAe0W_TextBase zlAe0W_Text rFU14q_Emphasis\">Chronic Disease Society (CDS) Africa<\/span>, a recent survey on respiratory illnesses in the county found that most children under five suffering from respiratory conditions live in households that use unclean cooking energy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zlAe0W_TextBase zlAe0W_Text\"><span class=\"zlAe0W_TextBase zlAe0W_Text rFU14q_Emphasis\">CDS Africa Chairperson Faith Okwayo<\/span>, speaking to the media during a medical camp organised by the <span class=\"zlAe0W_TextBase zlAe0W_Text rFU14q_Emphasis\">Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA)<\/span> in Siaya Town, said the county is among the country\u2019s <span class=\"zlAe0W_TextBase zlAe0W_Text rFU14q_Emphasis\">high-burden areas for respiratory illnesses<\/span> due to widespread use of unclean energy in homes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zlAe0W_TextBase zlAe0W_Text\">Okwayo said that because of the heavy respiratory disease burden in the region, <span class=\"zlAe0W_TextBase zlAe0W_Text rFU14q_Emphasis\">CDS Africa partnered with EPRA and the Siaya County Government<\/span> to conduct a specialised medical camp focused on screening and treating respiratory illnesses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201d This is a two-day specialised medical camp organised by EPRA and we will be targeting between two to three thousand patients with free services ranging from screening, diagnosis and treatment \u201c, Okwayo said<\/p>\n<p>She added that screening for specialised critical chronic diseases like Ashma, lung cancer, and pulmonary illnesses will be supported by a team of pulmologists who will be giving services at the event.<\/p>\n<p>EPRA\u00a0 director general Dr. Eng. Joseph Okech said that the initiative is part of the organisations cooporate social responsibility in line with the government\u2019s agenda of promoting access to universal health.<\/p>\n<p>Okech said that some of the health problems in Siaya county emanate from cooking with firewood, charcoal whose fumes cause respiratory illnesses.<\/p>\n<p>Eng.
