The opinion, written by\u00a0Chief Justice\u00a0John G. Roberts, Jr., found the president\u2019s executive order\u00a0violated the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArguments for limiting birthright citizenship to those domiciled in the United States fail,\u201d Roberts wrote. \u201cChildren born in the United States to parents unlawfully or temporarily present are \u2018subject to the jurisdiction\u2019 of the United States and are citizens at birth under the Fourteenth Amendment\u2019s Citizenship Clause. Under the Constitution, they are citizens at birth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The White House did not immediately respond to States Newsroom\u2019s request for comment,\u00a0but a day before the decision, Trump said in the Oval Office that he would accept the Supreme Court\u2019s ruling.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s up to them, but in terms of for the good of the country, it\u2019d be great if they \u2026 didn\u2019t allow it,\u201d Trump, who in a highly unusual move for a president attended the oral arguments on the case, said of birthright citizenship.<\/p>\n<p>On his first day back in office, President Trump signed an executive order denying automatic U.S. citizenship to babies unless one parent is either a U.S. citizen or a legal permanent resident \u2014 known as a green card holder \u2014 at the time of the baby\u2019s birth.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON, Jun 30 \u2013 The U.S. Supreme Court Tuesday struck down President Donald Trump\u2019s attempt to redefine the constitutional right to birthright citizenship.
