Singer Bonnie Tyler, known for hits including \u201cTotal Eclipse of the Heart\u201d, \u201cHolding Out for a Hero\u201d and \u201cIt\u2019s a Heartache\u201d, has died at the age of 75.<\/p>\n
A message posted on the official website for the hugely popular Welsh power ballad diva read: \u201cBonnie\u2019s family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for.\u201d<\/p>\n
In May, the performer, from Skewen in south Wales, was placed into an induced coma after having emergency intestinal surgery in Portugal.<\/p>\n
Last month, her spokesperson said she was out of the coma but remained \u201cvery unwell and in intensive care\u201d.<\/p>\n
The official statement, released on Thursday morning, continued: \u201cWe will issue a further statement shortly but for now ask for privacy to deal with this tragedy.\u201d<\/p>\n
Tyler, born Gaynor Hopkins, grew up in a council house in Neath.<\/p>\n
She was discovered by talent scout Roger Bell in a club in Swansea, and released her first single Lost in France in 1977.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a Heartache\u201d, her country-pop ballad released the same year, reached number four on the UK singles chart and number three on the US Billboard Hot 100.<\/p>\n
Her biggest hit, the rockier \u201cTotal Eclipse of the Heart\u201d, arrived six years later in 1983 \u2013 this time topping the charts on both sides of the Atlantic.<\/p>\n
In doing so, she became the first Welsh person to score a number one hit in the US.<\/p>\n
The dramatic track, penned by Meat Loaf\u2019s lyricist Jim Steinman, was originally titled \u201cVampires in Love\u201d, as it had been written for a musical version of Nosferatu.<\/p>\n
\u201cI never get tired of singing it,\u201d she recently told BBC News. \u201cI love it because everyone can\u2019t wait to sing it.\u201d<\/p>\n
