The Kenyatta University Council has appointed Prof. John Okumu as the University\u2019s substantive Vice-Chancellor, effective July 27, 2026.<\/p>\n
Prof. Okumu succeeds Prof. Paul Wainaina, becoming the seventh Vice-Chancellor in the institution\u2019s history and ushering in a new chapter in the leadership of one of Kenya\u2019s premier universities.<\/p>\n
The appointment was announced on Monday by the Chairperson of the University Council, Prof. Clara Momanyi, during a ceremony at the University\u2019s Main Campus. Prof. Momanyi officially presented Prof. Okumu with his appointment letter in the presence of members of the University Council and the University\u2019s Management Board.<\/p>\n
Speaking after receiving his appointment, Prof. Okumu thanked the University Council for its confidence in him and pledged to provide visionary, inclusive, and transformative leadership while advancing academic excellence.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am deeply honoured by the confidence the University Council has placed in me. I am committed to leading with
\nhumility, integrity, and openness as we work together to strengthen Kenyatta University\u2019s position as Kenya\u2019s premier
\nuniversity and a globally competitive institution,\u201d said Prof. Okumu.<\/p>\n
He assumes office at a time when Kenyatta University is consolidating its position as a leading centre of academic excellence, research, innovation, and societal impact. His appointment reflects the institution\u2019s commitment to strong leadership, sound governance, and continuous transformation in pursuit of its strategic goals.<\/p>\n
