US President Donald Trump has said new talks with Iran will begin on Monday, after calling off what he said would have been \u201cmassive\u201d strikes on the country.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThey knew the extent of the attack because they saw it forming,\u201d he told reporters on board Air Force One on Sunday. \u201cWe\u2019re talking to them in the form of a negotiation. It begins tomorrow afternoon.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an earlier post on Truth Social, Trump said he had been asked by Iran and US allies in the Middle East to \u201chold off\u201d on any attack as the \u201cperimeters\u201d of a deal had been agreed.<\/p>\n

Iran is yet to respond to Trump\u2019s remarks. The US president has repeatedly vowed that a negotiated end to the war is near, only for tit-for-tat strikes to resume.<\/p>\n

In his remarks on Air Force One, Trump declined to outline a deadline for a deal to be struck with Tehran, adding: \u201cWe\u2019ll just see how it is. We\u2019re ready to go anytime we want\u2026 I\u2019m not looking to kill people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump added that Saudi Arabia\u2019s Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman \u2013 as well as US partners such as the United Arab Emirates and Qatar \u2013 had urged him against conducting strikes over the weekend.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were all set to go,\u201d Trump said. \u201cThe reason they asked is [that] they think there\u2019s a deal,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s a deal on Hormuz, and there will be a deal on the nuclear.\u201d<\/p>\n

Global oil prices fell on Monday morning in Asia trading after Trump\u2019s announcement. Brent Crude oil was down by 4.5% at $83.98 (\u00a362.26), while US-traded oil was 4.6% lower at $80.74 (\u00a359.85).<\/p>\n

Energy prices have fluctuated since the conflict started on 28 February as traders reacted to disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n

Around 20% of the world\u2019s crude oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) usually flows through the strait.<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s semi-official Mehr news agency denied that Tehran had asked the US to hold off on further military action, saying Trump\u2019s claims were \u201cnothing but a new lie\u201d.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that negotiations with Oman on a deal on the Strait of Hormuz were \u201con track for finalisation\u201d, according to Iranian media.<\/p>\n

The US president has not yet made clear the venue for the talks on Monday, nor the potential attendees.<\/p>\n

During his remarks on Air Force One, Trump said that the planned strikes would have been \u201cthe biggest attack since World War II\u201d, and could have derailed prospects of a negotiated end to the months-long war.<\/p>\n

Trump declined to answer if he had been planning to strike Iranian energy infrastructure, which international law experts have said could constitute a war crime.<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s acting Defence Minister Majid Ibn al-Reza earlier said Tehran viewed every threat from its adversaries as \u201creal and credible\u201d even if it formed part of psychological warfare.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will neither be caught off guard nor remain passive,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The US president has previously issued apocalyptic warnings to Tehran, only to subsequently insist that diplomacy was being given a chance.<\/p>\n

In his post on Saturday, he said the US was \u201clocked and loaded and ready to go against the Islamic Republic of Iran, at levels of Military Terror, Strength, and Power not seen since World War II\u201d.<\/p>\n

But he added cancelling the attack would be \u201cfor the future benefit of the world and, likewise, the survival of a successful and prosperous Iran\u201d.<\/p>\n

Back on 7 April, the US president warned that \u201ca whole civilisation will die tonight\u201d if Iran refused to engage in peace talks. At the time, he also threatened to destroy civilian infrastructure and power plants.<\/p>\n

That threat did result in historic face-to-face talks in Pakistan, led by Vice-President JD Vance. However, those negotiations did not result in a deal.<\/p>\n

The Trump administration has also been largely dismissive of data showing the war \u2013 and its economic impact \u2013 are broadly unpopular with Americans, including with many Republicans.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
