{"id":15239,"date":"2024-03-19T17:03:57","date_gmt":"2024-03-19T17:03:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/index.php\/2024\/03\/19\/task-force-to-be-formed-to-address-issues-affecting-avocado-farmers\/"},"modified":"2024-03-19T17:03:57","modified_gmt":"2024-03-19T17:03:57","slug":"task-force-to-be-formed-to-address-issues-affecting-avocado-farmers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/task-force-to-be-formed-to-address-issues-affecting-avocado-farmers\/","title":{"rendered":"Task force to be formed to address issues affecting avocado farmers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Tuesday promised Avocado farmers that issues they have raised will be addressed to ensure they reap the best earnings from their farms.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the Deputy President said a Task Force will be formed to look deeply into issues affecting the Avocado subsector to make it more lucrative to the farmers.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on Tuesday when he hosted Avocado Stakeholders for a consultative meeting at the Official Residence in Karen, Nairobi, Gachagua said the Government is working on pertinent interventions to safeguard the multibillion-shilling sector following farmers\u2019 disquiet over the imposition of new levies.<\/p>\n<p>The DP said deliberations are ongoing on the review of a legal provision in the Finance Act 2023 spelling new taxes on Avocado and horticultural farming after farmers rejected it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have called a meeting tomorrow (Wednesday) with the Cabinet Secretaries for National Treasury and Agriculture, representatives of the fruit farmers, exporters and aggregators and the Kenya Revenue Authority\u00a0so we can agree on the way forward in the implementation of the clause in the Act.\u00a0We are a listening Government and we value consultations,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said the Members of Parliament had been made aware of the offensive clause asking them to look into removing it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDiscussions on the Finance\u00a0Bill are ongoing and amendments will be made to reflect the reality of the sector.\u00a0Members of Parliament\u00a0will do their part,\u201d the DP added.<\/p>\n<p>The Deputy President said the task force will be tasked with coming up with far-reaching remedies to the issues bedevilling the sub-sector.<\/p>\n<p>Members of the Task Force will include fruit farmers, exporters, aggregators, marketers, exporters, ship line operators and government officials drawn from relevant ministries and departments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe task force will work in earnest and come up with remedies in 30 days so that we agree on what needs to be done. As an Administration we are ready to engage with stakeholders and ensure farmers are happy,\u201d assured the Deputy President.<\/p>\n<p>The Managing Director of Horticultural Crops Development Authority (HCDA) Christine Chesaro,\u00a0told the forum that foreign income from avocado exports is on the rise.<\/p>\n<p>She said the value of the exports was Ksh19 billion in 2023 up from Ksh 15 billion in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite the challenges we\u00a0are\u00a0making progress. Murang\u2019a is leading\u00a0in\u00a0production followed by Nakuru. We are at position six in global exports. However, we need to increase production to have sufficient volumes to export throughout the season,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The farmers and exporters said that avocado farming is a lucrative business but the sub-sector was facing myriad challenges including post-harvest management, marketing, low pricing, lack of traceability mechanism and access to the global market.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAvocado farming is a lucrative business but small-scale farmers do not feel the economic power. The challenges include low prices dictated elsewhere without the involvement of farmers, high production costs since the sub-sector is labour and capital-intensive. The business is also infiltrated by middlemen and cartels sent by some exporters,\u201d said Dr Jeremiah Ng\u2019ang\u2019a, a farmer from Kigumo Murang\u2019a County.<\/p>\n<p>The Deputy President said he convened the meeting on instruction by President William Ruto. He added that the government is committed to streamlining the agriculture sector.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are keen to ensure the sector is protected and it grows so that we can increase exports and farmers\u2019 earnings.\u00a0Our economy starts with Agriculture and we will mobilize everybody to ensure we succeed,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a Government\u00a0we appreciate\u00a0the\u00a0role you play in this\u00a0critical sector and your place in the economy.
