{"id":175,"date":"2024-02-14T04:03:55","date_gmt":"2024-02-14T04:03:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/index.php\/2024\/02\/14\/who-publishes-first-ever-guidance-on-the-clinical-management-of-diphtheria\/"},"modified":"2024-02-14T04:03:55","modified_gmt":"2024-02-14T04:03:55","slug":"who-publishes-first-ever-guidance-on-the-clinical-management-of-diphtheria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/who-publishes-first-ever-guidance-on-the-clinical-management-of-diphtheria\/","title":{"rendered":"WHO publishes first-ever guidance\u00a0on the clinical management of diphtheria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The World Health organisation has published the first-ever guidance on the clinical management of diphtheria. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The only previously available guidance was an operational protocol with the new guidance following a rigorous process for developing guidance at WHO.<\/p>\n<p>The new guidelines address the use of Diphtheria Antitoxin (DAT) in the treatment of diphtheria with WHO saying that there has been a worldwide shortage of DAT and evidence based recommendations on the use of DAT were requested by many Member States.<\/p>\n<p>The guidance also includes new recommendations on antibiotics.<\/p>\n<p>In patients with suspected or confirmed diphtheria, WHO recommends using macrolide antibiotics (azithromycin, erythromycin) rather than penicillin antibiotics.<\/p>\n<p>According to WHO, the clinical practice guideline has been rapidly developed recognizing the global increase in diphtheria outbreaks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOutbreaks of diphtheria in Nigeria, Guinea and neighbouring countries in 2023 have highlighted the urgent need for evidence-based clinical practice guidelines for the treatment of diphtheria.\u201d Observes a statement from WHO.<\/p>\n<p>WHO says given the sporadic nature of outbreaks, many clinicians in the affected regions have never managed acute diphtheria and its related complications.<\/p>\n<p>Diphtheria remains a neglected disease and vaccination is the top priority with access to antibiotics, DAT and supportive care for patients with diphtheria \u00a0proving lifesaving.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kbc.co.ke\/who-publishes-first-ever-guidance-on-the-clinical-management-of-diphtheria\/\">WHO publishes first-ever guidance\u00a0on the clinical management of diphtheria<\/a> appeared first on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kbc.co.ke\/\">KBC<\/a>.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The World Health organisation has published the first-ever guidance on the clinical management of diphtheria.
