{"id":21930,"date":"2024-04-03T12:03:01","date_gmt":"2024-04-03T12:03:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/index.php\/2024\/04\/03\/i-quit-alcohol-a-year-ago-muteti-defends-record-as-he-interviews-for-judge\/"},"modified":"2024-04-03T12:03:01","modified_gmt":"2024-04-03T12:03:01","slug":"i-quit-alcohol-a-year-ago-muteti-defends-record-as-he-interviews-for-judge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/i-quit-alcohol-a-year-ago-muteti-defends-record-as-he-interviews-for-judge\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018I quit alcohol a year ago\u2019: Muteti defends record as he interviews for judge"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"cvwp-video-player\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/news\/#\" class=\"cvwp-load-video\" title=\"'I quit alcohol a year ago': Muteti defends record as he interviews for judge\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p><strong>NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 3 \u2014 Senior Director in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) Alexander Muteti has denied claims that he is an alcoholic terming a memorandum concerning the allegation as malicious.  <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Muteti responded to the accusation by lawyer Nelson Havi on Wednesday while appearing before an 11-member panel recruiting High Court judges.<\/p>\n<p>He told the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) chaired by Chief Justice Martha Koome that he had long quit alcohol.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI used to take alcohol but I am surprised my good friend (Havi) I stopped taking alcohol a year ago,\u201d Muteti told the panel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe (Havi) himself takes alcohol as a matter of public record,\u201d the senior prosecutor added.<\/p>\n<p>Muteti also pleaded with the JSC to protect him from discrimination on account of his official functions explaining that decisions by the ODPP are bound to infuriate accused persons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cODPP decisions cause pain. If we pursue this route, we may never hire prosecutors,\u201d he remarked.<\/p>\n<p>Muteti was among six candidates lined up to appear before the JSC on Wednesday as the Commission commenced interviews to hire twenty additional High Court judges.<\/p>\n<p>Others who were scheduled to make appearances included. Chief Magistrates Alex Ithuku and Alfred Gethi.<\/p>\n<p>Also lined up were lawyers \u00a0Adelaide Amimo, Agnes Njoroge and Chepngetich Soi.<\/p>\n<p>JSC outlined a 7-point selection criteria as interviews to recruit judges to the High Court commenced.<\/p>\n<p>Key among the attributes the 11-member panel will examine while processing 100 candidates shortlisted for interviews include professional competence, communication skills, integrity, fairness, good judgment, and legal experience.<\/p>\n<p>The panel will also assess the candidates\u2019 commitment to the public and community, particularly efforts to advance access to justice.<\/p>\n<p>In a note circulated on Wednesday, JSC noted candidates must demonstrate a profound grasp of substantive and procedural law, intellectual capacity, legal judgment, and diligence.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 3 \u2014 Senior Director in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) Alexander Muteti has denied claims that he is an alcoholic terming a memorandum concerning the allegation as malicious.
