{"id":2500,"date":"2024-02-19T06:04:02","date_gmt":"2024-02-19T06:04:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/index.php\/2024\/02\/19\/world-vision-initiative-regreening-africa-honored-as-un-world-restoration-flagship\/"},"modified":"2024-02-19T06:04:02","modified_gmt":"2024-02-19T06:04:02","slug":"world-vision-initiative-regreening-africa-honored-as-un-world-restoration-flagship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/world-vision-initiative-regreening-africa-honored-as-un-world-restoration-flagship\/","title":{"rendered":"World Vision initiative Regreening Africa honored as UN World Restoration Flagship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Normal\"><strong><span class=\"Normal__Char\">The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) have named\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/regreeningafrica.org\/where-we-work\/kenya\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"Hyperlink__Char\">Regreening Africa Initiative<\/span><\/a><\/strong><span class=\"Normal__Char\"><strong>\u00a0among other six initiatives as United Nations World Restoration Flagships, making the initiative eligible for technical and financial support from the UN.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\"><span class=\"Normal__Char\">The\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/news-and-stories\/press-release\/nature-staging-comeback-un-recognizes-seven-world-restoration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"Hyperlink__Char\">announcement<\/span><\/a><span class=\"Normal__Char\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"Normal__Char\">comes ahead of the 6th\u00a0session of the United Nations Environment Assembly\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"Normal__Char\">(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/environmentassembly\/unea6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"Hyperlink__Char\">UNEA-6<\/span><\/a><span class=\"Normal__Char\">),\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"Normal__Char\">the world\u2019s highest-level decision-making body for matters related to the environment, taking place from February 26th, 2024 \u2013 March 1st, 2024.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\"><span class=\"Normal__Char\">The World Restoration Flagship awards are part of the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.decadeonrestoration.org\/about-un-decade\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"Hyperlink__Char\">UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration\u00a0<\/span><\/a><span class=\"Normal__Char\">\u2013 led by UNEP and FAO \u2013 which aims to prevent, halt, and reverse the degradation of ecosystems on every continent and in every ocean. The awards track notable initiatives that support global commitments to restore one billion hectares.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\"><span class=\"Normal__Char\">Regreening Africa is lauded as one of the \u201cworld\u2019s most successful examples of healing the planet\u201d in large-scale and long-term models of ecosystem restoration, embodying the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.decadeonrestoration.org\/publications\/principles-ecosystem-restoration-guide-united-nations-decade-2021-2030\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"Hyperlink__Char\">10 Restoration Principles of the UN Decade<\/span><\/a><span class=\"Normal__Char\">.<\/span><span class=\"Normal__Char\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"Normal__Char\">In Kenya, the Regreening Africa initiative was implemented between 2017 and 2023, engaging with more than\u00a050,000\u00a0households\u00a0(10,000\u00a0smallholders directly and another\u00a040,000\u00a0through leveraging partner projects) and bringing over\u00a0150,000\u00a0hectares under restoration using the revolutionary technique to tackle both poverty and climate change, Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\"><span class=\"Normal__Char\">FMNR is a low-cost approach that is up to 36 times cheaper than planting a tree and can be replicated across different communities, for as little as 50 USD per hectare. It is a quick and easy process for degraded land restoration which involves regenerating trees from stumps that are still alive or managing new trees growing from wild seedlings through pruning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\"><span class=\"Normal__Char\">World Vision Kenya National Director Gilbert Kamanga said, \u201cWe gratefully embrace this esteemed recognition from the United Nations. Standing on the shoulders of the children and communities we serve; we pledge unwavering dedication to the relentless battle against climate change \u2013 a crisis of unparalleled magnitude in our era. Our resolve is firm: No effort shall be spared to safeguard Mother Nature for the successors of tomorrow.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\"><span class=\"Normal__Char\">World Vision Kenya and World Agroforestry (ICRAF) implemented the\u00a0Regreening Africa\u00a0initiative, in collaboration with the Government of Kenya, and a diverse range of stakeholders in Lambwe Valley in Homa Bay County and Nyatike in Migori County to catalyse land restoration, helping communities in\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wvi.org\/stories\/kenya\/regreening-homa-bay-using-trees-boost-food-security-and-tackle-climate-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"Hyperlink__Char\">Homa Bay<\/span><\/a><span class=\"Normal__Char\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wvi.org\/stories\/kenya\/regreening-initiatives-improve-well-being-families\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"Hyperlink__Char\">Migori<\/span><\/a><span class=\"Normal__Char\">\u00a0Counties to conserve their environment through soil and water conservation and reverse land degradation by encouraging smallholder farmers to grow trees in their farms and revive existing ones. The trees help to increase crop yields and boost livestock production. Consequently, they help cushion communities from the adverse effects of climate change such as droughts and floods. The approach was based on proven agroforestry techniques that were adapted to suit the needs of farmers under varying socio-ecological contexts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\"><span class=\"Normal__Char\">The European Union granted\u00a018 million Euros\u00a0for the first phase of Regreening Africa which was carried out from September 2017 to March 2023 across eight countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
