{"id":25955,"date":"2024-04-12T14:02:53","date_gmt":"2024-04-12T14:02:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/index.php\/2024\/04\/12\/kuria-vows-to-supervise-cba-negotiations-in-a-bid-to-contain-wagebill\/"},"modified":"2024-04-12T14:02:53","modified_gmt":"2024-04-12T14:02:53","slug":"kuria-vows-to-supervise-cba-negotiations-in-a-bid-to-contain-wagebill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/kuria-vows-to-supervise-cba-negotiations-in-a-bid-to-contain-wagebill\/","title":{"rendered":"Kuria vows to supervise CBA negotiations in a bid to contain wagebill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 12 \u2014 Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has announced that his Ministry will take charge of negotiating all Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBA) with government workers\u2019 unions nationwide.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kuria made the declaration in response to inquiries from journalists regarding the ongoing dispute between doctors and the government over salaries for medical interns.<\/p>\n<p>He emphasized that centralizing CBA negotiations under his ministry\u2019s purview would mitigate future conflicts and bring \u201csome semblance of order\u201d within the public service.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are going to crack the whip. Going forward, only my ministry is going to be in charge of negotiating CBAs because we\u2019re the HR experts of the government of the Republic of Kenya,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>CS Kuria reiterated the government\u2019s stance that medical interns should receive stipends, not salaries, denouncing the proposed Sh206,000 salary as unreasonable.<\/p>\n<p>He warned that conceding to doctors\u2019 demands could prompt similar \u2018unsrealistic\u2019 requests from other professions.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Equity <\/h2>\n<p>The Public Service CS said that just like doctors, Engineers, actuarial scientists and other professionals equally achieved better grades calling for fair treatment of all regardless of their jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Kuria added that it is unjust have rules for different professions \u201cfor people who went to the same high school together and chose to go different directions in their careers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am having this conversation to stop all profession or function-driven CBAs,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>While urging doctors to consider both their patients\u2019 well-being and the nation\u2019s \u201ceconomic health\u201d during negotiations, Kuria stressed the importance of finding a balanced resolution.<\/p>\n<p>On April 8, the Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists Dentists Union (KPMDU) threatened to escalate the ongoing doctors\u2019 strike as the government remained adamant on a proposed Sh70,000 salary for intern doctors.<\/p>\n<p>KPMDU officials, led by Secretary-General Dr. Davji Atella, convened with doctors in Eldoret, affirming their unwavering stance.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Atella accused some governors of withholding doctors\u2019 salaries as a form of intimidation.<\/p>\n<p>Responding to governors\u2019 claims that the disputed 2017 collective bargaining agreement should be reviewed, Atella insisted that the document was finalized and should be upheld without alterations.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 12 \u2014 Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has announced that his Ministry will take charge of negotiating all Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBA) with government workers\u2019 unions nationwide.
