{"id":26328,"date":"2024-04-13T09:02:50","date_gmt":"2024-04-13T09:02:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/index.php\/2024\/04\/13\/kutrrh-conducts-first-procedure-to-support-weak-artery\/"},"modified":"2024-04-13T09:02:50","modified_gmt":"2024-04-13T09:02:50","slug":"kutrrh-conducts-first-procedure-to-support-weak-artery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/kutrrh-conducts-first-procedure-to-support-weak-artery\/","title":{"rendered":"KUTRRH conducts first procedure to support weak artery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 13 \u2014 The Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH) has performed its first procedure to fix weak artery walls. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>KUTRRH performed the thoracic endovascular aneurysm repair (TEVAR) on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>A thoracic aortic aneurysm\u00a0occurs in the body\u2019s largest artery, the aorta, the main vessel supplying oxygen and nutrients.<\/p>\n<p>The Ministry of Health described the procedure as the first of its kind in any public hospital in Kenya.<\/p>\n<p>The procedure involved a patient who suffered from an aortic dissection caused by a tear in the aorta\u2019s internal face.<\/p>\n<p>The patient also had a penetrating ulcer and intramural hematoma, a condition characterized by blood leaking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe patient [was] admitted to KUTRRH with a history of sudden onset retrosternal chest pain, radiating to the back that was progressively increasing. This [was] associated with easy fatigability, dyspnea, and palpitations,\u201d KUTRRH said on Friday.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Minimally invasive procedure<\/h2>\n<p>Dr. Kanyeki, a heart specialist, conducted the procedure supported by Dr. Mustafa and Dr. Makori, Dr. Ombaka, who took care of the anesthesia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was a significant step forward in healthcare and KUTRRH is looking forward to more achievements in 2024,\u201d the hospital stated\u2019<\/p>\n<p>TEVAR is a minimally invasive procedure and doesn\u2019t require a doctor to perform open heart surgery.<\/p>\n<p>The procedure seeks to support weakened sections of the aorta walls. Doctors strategically provide support for the affected section to ease pressure on the damaged sections. <\/p>\n<p>KUTRRH said the procure is low-risk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn years past, surgeons used open surgery to treat thoracic aortic aneurysms and dissections. But they now prefer TEVAR in many cases.
