{"id":27711,"date":"2024-04-16T12:03:30","date_gmt":"2024-04-16T12:03:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/index.php\/2024\/04\/16\/child-dies-from-drowning-as-floods-wreck-havoc-in-kisumus-nyakach\/"},"modified":"2024-04-16T12:03:30","modified_gmt":"2024-04-16T12:03:30","slug":"child-dies-from-drowning-as-floods-wreck-havoc-in-kisumus-nyakach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/child-dies-from-drowning-as-floods-wreck-havoc-in-kisumus-nyakach\/","title":{"rendered":"Child dies from drowning as floods wreck havoc in Kisumu\u2019s Nyakach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>KISUMU, Kenya, Apr 16 \u2014 A child has died from drowning amid raging floods in Kisumu\u2019s Nyakach sub-county that have displaced several homes. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Red Cross said Tuesday the incident involving the minor happened in an area identified as Gem Rae.<\/p>\n<p>Kenya Red Cross coordinator Arnold Gondi who oversees operations in  Muhoroni, Nyakach, and Nyando sub-counties said the agency was collecting additional information to guide mitigation measures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlready I have received information about a child who has died as a result of the floods,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Red Cross and Kisumu County Disaster Management team were on the ground to assess the situation.<\/p>\n<p>County Head of Disaster, Maurice Oricho, said the information gathered will help strategize interventions by the local government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have many partners and we will work with them to get solutions to this problem,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Oricho said the assessment will seek to establish the exact number of families affected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCurrently, we can\u2019t give the exact numbers of affected families, but to help us mobilize funds, we must have that number,\u201d he said<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Need for dykes <\/h2>\n<p>Speaking at Ayweyo Primary School in Nyando, an evacuating centre, locals affected said they need dykes to control floods.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have lost chicken and many properties to water,\u201d said Jackline Atieno, a resident who noted raging waters entered houses displacing them at night.<\/p>\n<p>Area MCA Maurice Ngeta said several bridges had collapsed making transport difficult.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur roads are all in water, bridges washed away, we\u2019re in problems,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Ngeta called upon families affected not to wait but to move to evacuation camps.<\/p>\n<p>The assessment team also included health officials who cautioned the locals to be keen on the water they consume to avoid an outbreak of cholera and other waterborne diseases.<\/p>\n<p>More families living along River Nyando slept in the cold as the river burst its banks.<\/p>\n<p>The floods also affected Ahero Market, Ahero Girls Secondary School and adjacent homes.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>KISUMU, Kenya, Apr 16 \u2014 A child has died from drowning amid raging floods in Kisumu\u2019s Nyakach sub-county that have displaced several homes.
