The jailed head of Tunisia\u2019s Islamic opposition Ennahda party, Rached Ghannouchi, has joined a hunger strike by other political detainees to mark a year since their detention began.<\/p>\n
Mr Ghannouchi \u2013 who has accused Tunisia\u2019s President Ka\u00efs Sa\u00efed of mounting a coup \u2013 was given a three-year prison sentence earlier this month after being convicted for accepting external financing.<\/p>\n
President Sa\u00efed has closed the Ennahda party\u2019s headquarters, jailed many leading political opponents and critical journalists and reduced the independence of the country\u2019s courts.<\/p>\n
He claims the measures were necessary to prevent chaos and root out corruption.<\/p>\n
