Kirinyaga <\/span>County <\/span>Government <\/span>has deployed additional machinery and manpower to drain <\/span>water from <\/span>areas marooned by flood<\/span>s.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The machinery<\/span> <\/span>which includes<\/span> excavators, backhoes <\/span>and<\/span> trucks <\/span>are<\/span> being used to <\/span>clear soils and debris <\/span>that have blocked <\/span>drainage trenches and culverts <\/span>in <\/span>areas prone to flooding, mudslides and landslide <\/span>in <\/span>Tebere<\/span>, <\/span>Thiba<\/span>, <\/span>Wamumu<\/span>, <\/span>Gathigiriri<\/span>, <\/span>Mutithi<\/span>, <\/span>Kariti<\/span>, <\/span>Kangai<\/span> and <\/span>Nyangati<\/span> wards.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The county is also<\/span> excavati<\/span>ng <\/span>additional trenches <\/span>to drain water from flooded area.<\/span><\/p>\n

The team has already <\/span>completed digging drainage <\/span>trenches at <\/span>Mutithi<\/span> town, <\/span>Ngothi<\/span>, Unit 8, <\/span>Whiterose<\/span>, <\/span>Riandira<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>Maisha<\/span> <\/span>Kamili<\/span>, <\/span>Kithogondo<\/span>, <\/span>Kiamanyeki<\/span>, Red Soil, <\/span>Thiba<\/span>, <\/span>Kiorugari<\/span>, <\/span>Sagana<\/span> town, <\/span>Kangai<\/span> and among others.<\/span><\/p>\n

A<\/span>t the same time, a<\/span> joint disaster <\/span>preparedness and response committee<\/span> comprising of National and County Government officials has also been formed to coordinate response<\/span> <\/span>interventions to deal with floods and other emergencies arising from heavy rains in the County.<\/span><\/p>\n

The team <\/span>headed <\/span>by Deputy Governor David <\/span>Githanda<\/span> and County Commissioner Hussein <\/span>Allasow<\/span> had its first meeting Tuesday<\/span> where <\/span>residents were advised to move away from waterways and riparian land.<\/span><\/p>\n

Githanda<\/span> said <\/span>the committee had agreed on measures to be undertaken to safeguard lives of people and properties including evacuation of people from flood and landslide prone areas.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Deputy Governor said <\/span>that the committee <\/span>ha<\/span>s<\/span> mapped out areas <\/span>affected by <\/span>flooding<\/span> and agreed on immediate interventions among them the ongoing excavation of trenches and desilting of canals to drain water.<\/span><\/p>\n

On his part, <\/span>Allasow<\/span> said the flood situation in <\/span>Kirinyaga<\/span> is now under control thanks to quick response by the County Government.<\/span><\/p>\n

He said <\/span>County and National Government has supplied flood victims with food and other relief supplies to ensure no one suffers from hunger. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Commissioner advised motorists not to drive through flooded areas and those living near waterways to avoid crossing swollen rivers.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe have managed the situation and we are urging our people <\/span>to be on high alert because we have been told by the weatherman that the rains might continue,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

He said most of schools are safe and ready for re-opening on Monday except for one whose condition is being monitored.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Residents of areas affected by the floods said interventions being undertaken by the county <\/span>government have helped in redirecting flood water back into the rivers and other water catmint <\/span>areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

On Thursday, Governor Anne <\/span>Waiguru<\/span> said she had activated all emergency disaster response mechanisms <\/span>to deal with the floods <\/span>as well as implement prompt response.<\/span><\/p>\n

Waiguru<\/span> further asked people living near <\/span>Thiba<\/span> Dam and areas downstream to remain alert because the water reservoir is filling up very quickly.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

She<\/span>\u00a0however said some of the floods are being caused by people who have built on riparian land and others who are blocking drainage system.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI want to ask those blocking waterways to move away because our county is experiencing excess rains with <\/span>Mwea<\/span> being worst hit,\u201d she said.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Jared <\/span>Migwi<\/span>, the County Executive Committee Member for Tran<\/span>sport, Roads, Public Works and <\/span>Housing, <\/span>who visited some of the flooded areas said the flood situation is being addressed by creating alternative routes for water to flow from homes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>The County Government has deployed excavators to assist residents <\/span>marooned <\/span>by<\/span> the <\/span>floods <\/span>by digging<\/span> trench<\/span>es<\/span> to drain the wat<\/span>er, <\/span>so that residents can<\/span> <\/span>access <\/span>their<\/span> <\/span>homes<\/span>,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
