NAIROBI, Kenya May 8 \u2013 Doctors across the nation on Wednesday ended their nationwide strike following the signing of a return-to-work agreement with the Ministry of Health and counties. <\/p>\n
The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) members had been on strike for 56 days until Wednesday.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe strike has been called off and doctors should resume work immediately,\u201d Davji Atellah, KMPDU Secretary General said.<\/p>\n
The strike\u2019s sticking points included the intern doctors\u2019 pay and working conditions, as well as the implementation of a previously agreed-upon collective bargaining agreement.<\/p>\n
During the signing, Atellah revealed that the matter concerning interns had not been definitively resolved. <\/p>\n
As a result, there is a 60-day period during which the posting of medical interns will be suspended until a binding agreement is reached.<\/p>\n
Atellah attributed the absence of agreement on the issue to an ongoing court case in Eldoret, which is pending judgment.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs this matter in court is ongoing, we will also be having conversations but one thing we must assure everybody is that the rights of workers as enshrined in a collective bargaining agreement that is signed we will always endeavor to protect that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
