{"id":40581,"date":"2024-05-16T08:03:13","date_gmt":"2024-05-16T08:03:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/index.php\/2024\/05\/16\/national-administration-committee-roots-for-passport-printing-with-3-days\/"},"modified":"2024-05-16T08:03:13","modified_gmt":"2024-05-16T08:03:13","slug":"national-administration-committee-roots-for-passport-printing-with-3-days","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/national-administration-committee-roots-for-passport-printing-with-3-days\/","title":{"rendered":"National Administration Committee roots for passport printing with 3 days"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>NAIROBI, Kenya, May 16 \u2014 Parliament has recommended that Kenyans applying for passports receive the travel document within three days of submitting their application.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Through the National Assembly\u2019s Committee on National Administration and<br \/>Internal Security, MPs further urged the government to open more Immigration<br \/>offices across the country to make it easier to acquire passports.<\/p>\n<p>The MPs said currently, many applicants are forced to make long and costly<br \/>distances to access Nyayo House or any of the eight regional Immigration<br \/>offices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith adequate resourcing, targeting a maximum of three days for applicants<br \/>to be issued with passports is realistic\u2026This should be feasible, especially with<br \/>the opening of more offices in other parts of the country,\u201d said Narok West MP<br \/>Gabriel Tongoyo.<\/p>\n<p>The MP, who is also the chair of the Committee and other members, however,<br \/>lauded the government for introducing reforms that have improved the<br \/>efficiency of the Directorate of Immigration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were used to seeing long queues of people at Nyayo House even after 5<br \/>PM on working days, but we note that nowadays, those scenes are gone,\u201d said<br \/>Mandera East MP Hussein Abdirahman.<\/p>\n<p>The MPs spoke during the presentation of the State Department for Immigration<br \/>and Citizen Services\u2019 budget estimates for the 2024\/25 Financial Year and<br \/>supplementary estimates for FY 2023\/24.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Budgetary constraints <\/h2>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/news\/files\/2024\/05\/BITOK-POTRAIT.jpg\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Immigration PS Julius Bitok, who made the presentation, revealed that the<br \/>Department has been allocated Sh15.151 billion instead of the Sh15.873 billion it<br \/>requested in the Budget Policy Statement.<\/p>\n<p>Of the amount, Sh10.145 billion will be spent on the recurrent budget, while Sh5.091 billion will be committed to development projects.<\/p>\n<p>Under the second Supplementary estimates for FY 2023\/2024, the State Department\u2019s revised budget was Sh12.633 billion, with the bulk of the amount, Sh9.136 billion, going to the recurrent budget.<\/p>\n<p>Prof Bitok told the MPs that the Department had successfully cleared the<br \/>backlog of around 700,000 passports and invested heavily in equipment and<br \/>technology using funds obtained as Appropriation-in-Aid from Immigration<br \/>and other services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith Parliament\u2019s support, we have dealt with the issue of passport backlog<br \/>and instituted important reforms, including creating two banking halls, buying<br \/>two printers, and increasing personnel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also cited the digitization of over 16,000 government services on eCitizen<br \/>and the introduction of the visa-free entry regime in January and the Electronic<br \/>Travel Authorisation (eTA) that has processed over 500,000 visitors to Kenya<br \/>among the Department\u2019s milestones.<\/p>\n<p>The PS appealed for more funding to roll out the newly introduced digital ID,<br \/>the Maisha Card and its supporting infrastructure, and the Shirika Plan that<br \/>proposes moving refugees out of camps by integrating them with host<br \/>communities.<\/p>\n<p>Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki and the PS have previously promised<br \/>to introduce a 7-day maximum waiting time for passport applications.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NAIROBI, Kenya, May 16 \u2014 Parliament has recommended that Kenyans applying for passports receive the travel document within three days of submitting their application.
