{"id":43516,"date":"2024-05-23T05:02:55","date_gmt":"2024-05-23T05:02:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/index.php\/2024\/05\/23\/haiti-health-system-on-verge-of-collapse-un-says\/"},"modified":"2024-05-23T05:02:55","modified_gmt":"2024-05-23T05:02:55","slug":"haiti-health-system-on-verge-of-collapse-un-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/haiti-health-system-on-verge-of-collapse-un-says\/","title":{"rendered":"Haiti health system on verge of collapse, UN says"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"sc-43e6b7ba-0 bWSguZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Haiti\u2019s health system is \u201con the verge of collapse\u201d, the UN children\u2019s agency, Unicef, has warned, saying six out of 10 hospitals in the country are barely operational.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cThe combination of violence, mass displacement, dangerous epidemics, and increasing malnutrition has bent Haiti\u2019s health system,\u201d said Bruno Maes, Unicef\u2019s representative in the Caribbean nation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But he stressed that \u201cthe strangling of supply chains may be what breaks it\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Armed gangs still control much of the capital Port-au-Prince, and Unicef says millions of children are at risk of disease and malnutrition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The country has suffered from severe instability since the assassination of President Jovenel Mo\u00efse in 2021, during which time gangs have increasingly come to control swathes of the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Overall, as many as 4.4 million people in the country are in urgent need of food assistance, and 1.6 million people \u201cface emergency levels of acute food insecurity, which increases the risk of child wasting and malnutrition\u201d, Unicef said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Port-au-Prince\u2019s international airport reopened earlier this week after nearly three months of closure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But Unicef said it is currently operating with limited capacity and a significant backlog.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The situation in the capital is especially dire, the UN agency said. Containers filled with vital supplies have been either held up or looted, as were many warehouses and pharmacies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Reginald Fils-Aim\u00e9, director of strategic planning at the Haiti-based Zanmi Lasante NGO, told the BBC that by \u201ccontrolling the roads to and from the capital, gangs severely affect the supply chain and all transportation, including healthcare staff and patient transportation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Dr Fils-Aim\u00e9 said criminal armed groups also controlled several large areas in the central Artibonite department, where his NGO has been working since the 1980s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cMany essential medicines have been in short supply because most come from outside the country. Recently, there was a shortage of IV fluids, diuretics, blood pressure medicine, and beta-blockers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cChildren and babies living in camps for the internally displaced are particularly vulnerable to non-hygienic environments and the water-borne diseases that they spread. Now that the rainy season has started, they are also exposed to vector-borne diseases such as malaria,\u201d Dr Fils-Aim\u00e9 added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Nadesh Mijoba, country director of the Haitian Health Foundation (HHF) told the BBC that \u201cthere are many areas where the health services that once were available to communities have been closed down due to attacks and even destruction of infrastructure\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cFor others, such as HHF, our patient load is increasing significantly as patients are walking farther distances in search of health services, oftentimes, at very high risks of violence, kidnapping, rape, and even being killed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cI have been living and working in Haiti for over 11 years now, and I have never seen the humanitarian situation this catastrophic,\u201d Ms Mijoba said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Kenya is due to deploy police to Haiti at the head of an international taskforce that will try to help the country\u2019s transitional council restore some stability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The country\u2019s leader, William Ruto, met US President Joe Biden at the White House on Wednesday to discuss the operation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Dr Fils-Aim\u00e9 said he hoped that Haiti\u2019s main seaport and the roads \u201cwill be free in the coming months\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Partners In Health, Zanmi Lasante\u2019s sister organisation based in Boston, has been pushing for the establishment of a humanitarian corridor to ensure urgent critical aid deliveries around Haiti.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The gangs had been carrying out deadly co-ordinated attacks, demanding the resignation of the then Prime Minister Ariel Henry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">He agreed to step down in March. Nine members of the transitional council have now been sworn in to lead the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But gangs have capitalised on the power vacuum left by Mr Henry\u2019s exit and expanded their control over swathes of the country, which has effectively become lawless in places.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sc-43e6b7ba-0 dKljgB\">\n<h2 class=\"sc-518485e5-0 kRvAla\">Haiti: The basics<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-43e6b7ba-0 bWSguZ\">\n<p>The Caribbean country shares a border with the Dominican Republic and has an estimated population of 11.5 million<br \/>\nIt has a land area of 27,800 sq km, which is slightly smaller than Belgium and about the same size as the US state of Maryland<br \/>\nChronic instability, dictatorships and natural disasters in recent decades have left Haiti the poorest nation in the Americas<br \/>\nAn earthquake in 2010 killed more than 200,000 people and caused extensive damage to infrastructure and the economy<br \/>\nA UN peacekeeping force was put in place in 2004 to help stabilise the country and only withdrew in 2017<br \/>\nIn July 2021, President Jovenel Mo\u00efse was assassinated by unidentified gunmen in Port-au-Prince.
