{"id":54652,"date":"2024-06-18T06:04:00","date_gmt":"2024-06-18T06:04:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/index.php\/2024\/06\/18\/putin-to-visit-north-korea-for-first-time-in-24-years-3\/"},"modified":"2024-06-18T06:04:00","modified_gmt":"2024-06-18T06:04:00","slug":"putin-to-visit-north-korea-for-first-time-in-24-years-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/putin-to-visit-north-korea-for-first-time-in-24-years-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Putin to visit North Korea for first time in 24 years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>June 18 \u2013 <strong>Russian President Vladimir Putin has praised North Korea for \u201cfirmly supporting\u201d Moscow\u2019s war in Ukraine, ahead of his first visit to Pyongyang in 24 years.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mr Putin is expected to arrive in the capital to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The two leaders last met in September at the Vostochny cosmodrome in Russia\u2019s far east, but this is Mr Putin\u2019s first visit to Pyongyang since 2000.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter published in North Korean state media, Mr Putin promised to build trade and security systems with Pyongyang \u201cthat are not controlled by the West\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>President Putin also vowed support for Pyongyang\u2019s efforts to defend its interests despite what he called \u201cUS pressure, blackmail and military threats\u201d, in the article printed in Rodong Sinmun, North Korea\u2019s ruling party mouthpiece.<\/p>\n<p>He said the two countries would continue to \u201cresolutely oppose\u201d what he described as Western ambitions \u201cto hinder the establishment of a multipolarised world order based on mutual respect for justice\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The United States said it was concerned about the \u201cdeepening relationship between these two countries\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Kremlin has described the event as a \u201cfriendly state visit\u201d with Russian media reporting Mr Putin and Mr Kim may sign a partnership agreement, including on security issues, and will give joint statements to the media.<\/p>\n<p>A parade in Kim Il Sung square is anticipated. Mr Putin is also expected to watch a concert and visit the Orthodox Church of the Life-Giving Trinity in Pyongyang, the only orthodox church in North Korea.<\/p>\n<p>There are reports Mr Putin will stay at the Kumsusan guesthouse in Pyongyang, where Chinese leader Xi Jinping last stayed during his state visit to North Korea in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Putin is expected to arrive with his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c8vzzqz2qq6o\">new defence minister, Andrei Belousov<\/a>, while Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak will also be part of the delegation.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Kim said last week that ties with Russia had \u201cdeveloped into an unbreakable relationship of comrades-in-arms\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>During their meeting last year, Mr Putin said he saw \u201cpossibilities\u201d for military cooperation with North Korea, while Mr Kim wished Russia\u2019s president \u201cvictory\u201d in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>The White House said the US is concerned about closer ties between Russia and North Korea.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not concerned about the trip\u201d by Mr Putin, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters on Monday. \u201cWhat we are concerned about is the deepening relationship between these two countries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>John Nilsson-Wright, head of the Japan and Koreas programme at Cambridge University\u2019s Centre for Geopolitics, said Mr Putin is \u201cstrengthening ties with its old Cold War partner\u201d in an effort to \u201ccounter any suggestion that the US and its allies have been able to isolate Moscow\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is bolstering relations between authoritarian regimes at a time when democratic governments are in a defensive position, confronting global security challenges\u201d in the Middle East, East Asia and Ukraine, he added.<\/p>\n<p>In 2000, at the start of his presidential career, Mr Putin met Mr Kim\u2019s father, Kim Jong Il, who was still supreme leader.<\/p>\n<p>Ties between the two pariah states have increased in recent years, especially since Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>North Korea needs help with space technology after\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-66601760\">its recent failure to put a second spy satellite into orbit<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 as well as food, fuel, and foreign currency.<\/p>\n<p>While Russia faces a continued shortage of weapons in its war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>Washington and Seoul have accused Pyongyang of supplying Moscow with artillery and other equipment, most likely in exchange for food and military aid and technology.
