{"id":55126,"date":"2024-06-19T08:03:05","date_gmt":"2024-06-19T08:03:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/index.php\/2024\/06\/19\/anti-finance-bill-protests-kick-off-in-mombasa-despite-rains\/"},"modified":"2024-06-19T08:03:05","modified_gmt":"2024-06-19T08:03:05","slug":"anti-finance-bill-protests-kick-off-in-mombasa-despite-rains","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/anti-finance-bill-protests-kick-off-in-mombasa-despite-rains\/","title":{"rendered":"Anti-Finance Bill protests kick off in Mombasa despite rains"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 19 \u2013 Anti-Finance bill protests on Wednesday kicked off in Mombasa despite rains being experienced in the area. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of protestors have already converged in the streets of Mombasa where there is a heavy presence of police. <\/p>\n<p>The famous Mapembeni area along Moi Avenue, initially designated as the central meeting point, has been cordoned off.<\/p>\n<p>Braving tear gas and a heavy police presence, young activists, popularly known as Gen Zs in organized under the banner of \u201cOccupy Parliament,\u201d on Tuesday peacefully marched through Nairobi city streets, chanting and demanding that their leaders reject the bill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReject Finance Bill, down with Finance Bill,\u201d they chanted.<\/p>\n<p>Some protestors, aboard a police lorry, condemned the government for using excessive force but vowed that no amount of intimidation would silence their voices.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike traditional protests often led by older youth and mobilized by politicians, Tuesday\u2019s demonstration was notable for its younger participants and peaceful nature.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of stones, crude weapons, and chaos usually associated with anti-government protests, Tuesday\u2019s protestors were armed with smartphones and placards bearing various messages.<\/p>\n<p>The protest was decentralized and lacked clear leadership, making it difficult for police to target those behind it.<\/p>\n<p>The coordination and mobilization of the protests were partly done via social media platforms, including X, TikTok, and Facebook.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 19 \u2013 Anti-Finance bill protests on Wednesday kicked off in Mombasa despite rains being experienced in the area.
