Secret Service agents have rushed former President Donald Trump off stage after gunshots erupted at a rally in Pennsylvania.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Footage showed him grimace and raise a hand to his right ear, before ducking as sharp cracks \u2013 apparently shots \u2013 broke out.<\/p>\n

He was quickly swarmed by secret service agents and rushed off stage to a waiting vehicle. He raised a fist as he was bundled into the car.<\/p>\n

In a post to his Truth Social network, Trump said the bullet pierced the \u201cupper part\u201d of his right ear. Earlier, his spokesperson said he was \u201cfine\u201d and receiving treatment at a local medical centre.<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin,\u201d Trump wrote. \u201cMuch bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening.\u201d<\/p>\n

Blood was clearly visible on Trump\u2019s ear and face as protection officers rushed him away.<\/p>\n

Law enforcement sources told the BBC\u2019s US partner, CBS News, that the suspect was shot dead at the scene by Secret Service agents. They added that the male attacker had been armed with a rifle and had fired from an elevated structure a few hundred metres away.<\/p>\n

In his statement, Trump said one bystander was killed and another seriously injured in the shooting.<\/p>\n

The Secret Service said Trump was safe and that measures for his protection had been implemented.<\/p>\n

They added that an active investigation was now under way and that further information would be released when available.<\/p>\n

The Republican candidate for president had just started addressing his supporters in Butler, Pennsylvania \u2013 a crucial swing state in November\u2019s election \u2013 when the shots started.<\/p>\n

Multiple bangs rang out as Trump spoke about his successor, President Joe Biden, and his administration.<\/p>\n

Several supporters holding placards and standing behind Trump ducked as the shots were heard.<\/p>\n

Bystanders who spoke to the BBC suggested the gunshots may have come from a one-storey building to the right of the stage where Trump was speaking.<\/p>\n

One witness \u2013 Greg \u2013 told the BBC that he had spotted a suspicious-looking person \u201cbear crawling\u201d on the roof of the building about five minutes before Trump took to the stage. He said he pointed the person out to police.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe had a rifle, we could clearly see him with a rifle,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re pointing at him, the police are down there running around on the ground \u2013 we\u2019re like \u2018hey man there\u2019s a guy on the roof with a rifle\u2019 and the police did not know what was going on.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another witness, Jason, told the BBC that he heard five shots, which went off in quick succession.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe see the Secret Service jump on Trump to protect him. Everyone in the crowd dropped down very quickly,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe shortly thereafter stood up and put his fist up in the air, said a couple of things.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tim \u2013 who was also at the rally \u2013 told the BBC that he had heard a \u201cbarrage\u201d of shots.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was a spray which we initially thought was a fire hose, and then the speaker on the right-hand side started coming down,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cSomething must have hit the hydraulic lines [which caused it to fall]. We saw President Trump go to the ground and everyone started dropping to the ground because it was chaos.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking from his home state of Delaware, President Biden deplored the attack, calling it \u201csick\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no place in America for this kind of violence,\u201d he said, adding that he hoped to speak to Trump in the coming hours. \u201cEverybody must condemn it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Politicians of both parties joined Mr Biden in condemning the apparent attack.<\/p>\n

Former President Barack Obama said there \u201cis absolutely no place for political violence in our democracy\u201d and that he was \u201crelieved that former President Trump wasn\u2019t seriously hurt\u201d.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s former vice-president Mike Pence said he and his wife were praying for his former ally, adding that he urged \u201cevery American to join us\u201d.<\/p>\n

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said in a statement: \u201cMy thoughts and prayers are with former President Trump. I am thankful for the decisive law enforcement response. America is a democracy. Political violence of any kind is never acceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n

UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer led international condemnation of the shooting, saying he was \u201cappalled by the shocking scenes at President Trump\u2019s rally\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cPolitical violence in any form has no place in our societies and my thoughts are with all the victims of this attack,\u201d he said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Trump was set to accept his party\u2019s nomination for president at the convention in Milwaukee on Monday. Some had speculated that he had been set to reveal his running mate at the Butler rally.<\/p>\n

He remains locked in a tight contest with President Biden in a re-match of the 2020 election.<\/p>\n
