{"id":66731,"date":"2024-07-17T09:03:12","date_gmt":"2024-07-17T09:03:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/index.php\/2024\/07\/17\/macharia-gaitho-demands-action-against-police-for-mistaken-identity-arrest\/"},"modified":"2024-07-17T09:03:12","modified_gmt":"2024-07-17T09:03:12","slug":"macharia-gaitho-demands-action-against-police-for-mistaken-identity-arrest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/macharia-gaitho-demands-action-against-police-for-mistaken-identity-arrest\/","title":{"rendered":"Macharia Gaitho demands action against police for mistaken identity arrest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NAIROBI, Kenya July 17 \u2013 Veteran journalist Macharia Gaitho has demanded accountability for police officers who mishandled him during his dramatic arrest, which police later clarified was a case of mistaken identity.<\/p>\n<p>Gaitho was arrested on Wednesday while with his son. <\/p>\n<p>Despite seeking refuge at Karen Police Station after realizing he was being trailed, police officers apprehended and roughed him up.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after, police apologized, citing mistaken identity, but Gaitho\u2019s lawyer, Dunstan Omari, described the apology as too little, too late.<\/p>\n<p>Omari revealed plans to petition the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and the National Police Service (NPS) to investigate and potentially suspend the police officers involved in the \u201cillegal\u201d arrest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is quite a dark day today,\u201d Omari said. <\/p>\n<p>Omari stressed that the law clearly outlines procedures for arrests, criticizing the officers for using excessive force during Gaitho\u2019s arrest, resulting in bruised hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not an isolated event that anybody can say was a case of mistaken identity.
