July 26 \u2013 One of the world\u2019s most powerful drug lords, Ismael \u201cEl Mayo\u201d Zambada, leader of Mexico\u2019s Sinaloa cartel, has been arrested by US federal agents in El Paso, Texas.<\/p>\n

Zambada, 76, founded the criminal organisation with Joaquin \u201cEl Chapo\u201d Guzman, who is currently jailed in the US.<\/p>\n

Arrested with Zambada on Thursday was Guzman\u2019s son, Joaquin Guzman Lopez, said the US justice department.<\/p>\n

In February, Zambada was charged by US prosecutors with a conspiracy to make and distribute fentanyl, a drug more powerful than heroin that has been blamed for the US opioid crisis.<\/p>\n

Details of the arrests of the two men remain unclear, but it appears they flew into the United States.<\/p>\n

Citing Mexican and US officials, the\u00a0Wall Street Journal reports<\/a>\u00a0that Zambada was tricked into boarding the plane by a high-ranking Sinaloa member following a months-long operation by Homeland Security Investigations and the FBI.<\/p>\n

The paper added that Zambada believed he was going to inspect clandestine airfields in Mexico.<\/p>\n

Officials said Zambada was \u201clured\u201d onto a private plane under \u201cfalse pretences\u201d by Guzman Lopez, the\u00a0New York Times reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Zambada believed the plane would fly south in Mexico but instead it flew north and landed in El Paso,\u00a0said Fox News Correspondent Bryan Llenas<\/a>\u00a0citing law enforcement sources.<\/p>\n

Guzman Lopez surrendered to US authorities and turned on Zambada because he \u201cblamed Mayo for the capture of his father\u201d, Mr Llenas added.<\/p>\n

In a written statement on Thursday evening, US Attorney General Merrick Garland said the two men lead \u201cone of the most violent and powerful drug trafficking organisations in the world\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cFentanyl is the deadliest drug threat our country has ever faced, and the Justice Department will not rest until every single cartel leader, member and associate responsible for poisoning our communities is held accountable,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

American prosecutors say the Sinaloa cartel is the biggest supplier of drugs to the US.<\/p>\n

US authorities have previously noted that fentanyl is the leading cause of death for Americans aged 18 to 45.<\/p>\n

The US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) had been offering a reward of up to $15m (\u00a312m) for Zambada\u2019s capture.<\/p>\n

During\u00a0Joaquin \u201cEl Chapo\u201d Guzman\u2019s trial in 2019<\/a>, his lawyers accused Zambada of bribing the \u201centire\u201d Mexican government in exchange for living openly without fear of prosecution.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn truth [Guzman] controlled nothing,\u201d Guzman\u2019s lawyer, Jeffrey Lichtman, told jurors. \u201cMayo Zambada did,\u201d he claimed.<\/p>\n

According to the\u00a0US state department<\/a>, Zambada is also the owner of several legitimate businesses in Mexico, including \u201ca large milk company, a bus line and a hotel\u201d, as well as real estate assets.<\/p>\n

Alongside fentanyl charges, he is also facing charges in the US ranging from drug trafficking, murder, kidnapping, money laundering and organised crime.<\/p>\n

In May, Zambada\u2019s nephew \u2013 Eliseo Imperial Castro, who was known as \u201cCheyo Antrax\u201d \u2013 was killed in an ambush in Mexico. He was also wanted by US authorities.<\/p>\n

Zambada is arguably the biggest drug lord in the world and certainly the most influential in the Americas.<\/p>\n

He had evaded authorities for decades, and as such, his arrest has come as a shock in Mexico.<\/p>\n

In a statement, US Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas said the Sinaloa cartel \u201cpioneered the manufacture of fentanyl and has for years trafficked it into our country, killing hundreds of thousands of Americans and devastating countless communities\u201d.<\/p>\n

FBI director Chris Wray said the arrests are \u201can example of the FBI\u2019s and our partners\u2019 commitment to dismantling violent transnational criminal organisations like the Sinaloa Cartel,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

As more information emerges, Zambada\u2019s arrest will no doubt be heralded by President Joe Biden\u2019s administration as one of the most significant operations by the DEA in years.<\/p>\n

Zambada co-founded the Sinaloa cartel in the wake of the collapse of the Guadalajara cartel at the end of the 1980s.<\/p>\n

While Joaquin \u201cEl Chapo\u201d Guzman was the public face of the organisation and the most notorious of the two men, many believed it was in fact El Mayo who was its real leader.<\/p>\n

Not only ruthless, he was also innovative, creating and maintaining some of the earliest links with Colombian cartels to flood the US with cocaine and heroin.<\/p>\n

And more latterly, fentanyl.<\/p>\n

His leadership of the criminal empire has endured in the face of changing presidents in Mexico and the US, amid repeated anti-drug offensives from successive governments and constant efforts by his enemies in other drug-trafficking organisations to bring him down.<\/p>\n

That is no mean feat in the violent, dangerous and treacherous underworld in which he has operated as an unassailable kingpin for many years.<\/p>\n

Yet that extraordinary resilience appears to have run out in El Paso, Texas \u2013 a city blighted by the influx of the synthetic opioid, fentanyl, much of which was smuggled in by his organisation.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
