We simply won\u2019t do that.\u201d<br \/>\nX said it would not comply \u201cin secret with illegal orders\u201d, adding that it would publish the judge\u2019s demands in the coming days \u201cin the interests of transparency\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Moraes had ordered that X accounts accused of spreading disinformation \u2013 many supporters of the former right-wing president Jair Bolsonaro \u2013 must be blocked while they are under investigation. He said the company\u2019s legal representatives would be held liable if any accounts were reactivated.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the bank accounts of Mr Musk\u2019s satellite internet firm Starlink have been frozen in Brazil following an order by the country\u2019s Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>Starlink responded with a post on X which said the \u201corder is based on an unfounded determination that Starlink should be responsible for the fines levied \u2013 unconstitutionally \u2013 against X.\u201d<br \/>\nMr Musk also said on X that \u201cSpaceX and X are two completely different companies with different shareholders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Starlink is a subsidiary of Mr Musk\u2019s rocket firm SpaceX.<br \/>\nIn 2022, the government of then-President Bolsonaro gave Starlink the green light to operate in Brazil.<\/p>\n<p>As South America\u2019s largest country, Brazil and its remote regions in the Amazon have huge potential for Starlink, which specialises in providing internet services to isolated areas.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Moraes gained prominence after his decisions to restrict social media platforms in the country.<\/p>\n<p>He is also investigating Mr Bolsonaro and his supporters for their roles in an alleged attempted coup on 8 January last year.<br \/>\nX is not the first social media company to come under pressure from authorities in Brazil.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Telegram was temporarily banned over its failure to cooperate with requests to block certain profiles.<\/p>\n<p>Meta\u2019s messaging service Whatsapp also faced temporary bans in 2015 and 2016 for refusing to comply with police requests for user data.<\/p>\n<p>The post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kbc.co.ke\/x-braced-for-brazil-ban-as-judges-deadline-passes\/\">X braced for Brazil ban as judge\u2019s deadline passes<\/a> first appeared on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kbc.co.ke\/\">KBC<\/a>.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Justice Moraes gave X 24 hours to name a new legal representative or face suspension, with the deadline coming just after 20:00 local time (23:00 GMT) on Thursday.
