Facebook owner Meta says it is banning several Russian state media networks, alleging they use deceptive tactics to carry out influence operations and evade detection on its platforms.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAfter careful consideration, we expanded our ongoing enforcement against Russian state media outlets. Rossiya Segodnya, RT and other related entities are now banned from our apps globally for foreign interference activity,\u201d Meta said.<\/p>\n

The bans are expected to come into effect in the next few days.<\/p>\n

The Russian embassy in Washington, broadcaster RT, formerly Russia Today, and the owner of the Sputnik news agency, Rossiya Segodnya, did not immediately respond to BBC requests for comment.<\/p>\n

Russian state media outlets have come under increased scrutiny over claims they have tried to influence politics in Western countries.<\/p>\n

As well as Facebook, social media giant Meta owns Instagram, WhatsApp and Threads.<\/p>\n

The move marks an escalation in world\u2019s biggest social media firm\u2019s stance towards Russian state media companies.<\/p>\n

Two years ago, Meta took more limited measures to limit the spread of Russian state-controlled media, including stopping the outlets from running adverts on its platforms and limiting the reach of their content.<\/p>\n

After the start of the war in Ukraine, Meta \u2013 like other social media platforms \u2013 complied with requests from the EU, UK, and Ukraine to block some Russian state media in those regions.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, the US accused state broadcaster RT of paying a Tennessee firm $10m (\u00a37.6m) to \u201ccreate and distribute content to US audiences with hidden Russian government messaging\u201d.<\/p>\n

An indictment said videos \u2013 which often promoted right-wing narratives on issues such as immigration, gender and the economy \u2013 were secretly \u201cedited, posted, and directed\u201d by two RT employees.<\/p>\n

Last week, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced new sanctions against RT, accusing it of being a \u201cde facto arm of Russia\u2019s intelligence apparatus\u201d.<\/p>\n

The top US diplomat told reporters on Friday that RT is part of a network of Russian-backed media outlets which have sought to covertly \u201cundermine democracy in the United States\u201d.<\/p>\n

He added that the Russian government has \u201cembedded within RT, a unit with cyber operational capabilities and ties to Russian intelligence\u201d.
\nRT live-streamed Mr Blinken\u2019s remarks on X and declared it the \u201cUS\u2019s latest conspiracy theory\u201d.<\/p>\n
