{"id":97432,"date":"2024-09-28T11:03:35","date_gmt":"2024-09-28T11:03:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/index.php\/2024\/09\/28\/parliament-wants-cheaper-internet-for-digital-hubs-in-constituencies\/"},"modified":"2024-09-28T11:03:35","modified_gmt":"2024-09-28T11:03:35","slug":"parliament-wants-cheaper-internet-for-digital-hubs-in-constituencies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/parliament-wants-cheaper-internet-for-digital-hubs-in-constituencies\/","title":{"rendered":"Parliament wants cheaper internet for digital hubs in constituencies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Parliamentary Committee on Communication, Innovation and Information has expressed support for the entry of new players into the country\u2019s internet market.<br \/>\nThe committee was, however, quick to note that it would vet these players to ensure that the law is followed and that consumers\u2019 rights and data are protected.<\/p>\n<p>The entry of the US-based Starlink company into the internet market has caused concern, with the country\u2019s Safaricom company warning that this could disrupt the market.<br \/>\nCommittee Chairman John Kiarie stated that the entry of the new player would lead to a reduction in internet charges, a move that is popular among Kenyans.<br \/>\nHe mentioned that the issue had been brought to the committee\u2019s attention, adding that they were looking into it to ensure that the US company abides by the law.<br \/>\n\u201cCompetition is healthy, as consumers end up benefiting from better services and lower internet rates, and innovation brings with it disruption,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing the press at Enashipai Spa in Naivasha during a committee meeting, the Dagoreti South MP promised all players in the internet sector a fair playing field.<br \/>\nAt the same time, he stated that the committee was working on reviewing all archaic laws and policies in the ICT sector, as they were hindering development.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding digital hubs, the legislator said that Parliament had established rules and regulations that allow the NG-CDF to construct the hubs and the national government to equip them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe government has plans to open 1,450 digital hubs across the country and this is on course in a partnership between the NG-CDF and Ministry of ICT,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>This was echoed by nominated MP Irene Nyakerario, who described the digital hubs as a game changer that would greatly support unemployed youths.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are working with stakeholders to identify the policy gaps in the ICT sector even as we empower our youths to free the internet,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>On her part, Engineer Maureen Mwaniki from Huawei Company stated that they had partnered with the Ministry of ICT to connect 30 schools to free internet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSix of these schools cater for the special and needy students and this is part of digital learning as part of improving learning,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Others who spoke included Fiona Asonga, CEO of the Technology Service Providers Association of Kenya (TESPOK), who called for a review of some archaic laws in the ICT sector.<\/p>\n<p>The post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kbc.co.ke\/parliament-wants-cheaper-internet-for-digital-hubs-in-constituencies\/\">Parliament wants cheaper internet for digital hubs in constituencies<\/a> first appeared on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kbc.co.ke\/\">KBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kbc.co.ke\/parliament-wants-cheaper-internet-for-digital-hubs-in-constituencies\/\">Parliament wants cheaper internet for digital hubs in constituencies<\/a> appeared first on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kbc.co.ke\/\">KBC<\/a>.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Parliamentary Committee on Communication, Innovation and Information has expressed support for the entry of new players into the country\u2019s internet market.
