French Prime Minister Michel Barnier delivered a comprehensive 1.5-hour speech Tuesday in the National Assembly, detailing his government\u2019s key priorities including public deficit reduction, immigration reform and retirement policies.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Barnier set ambitious target for France\u2019s public deficit, aiming to bring it down to 5 percent of its gross domestic product (GDP) in 2025 from this year\u2019s 6 percent, and further down to 3 percent in 2029.<\/p>\n

To achieve the goal, Barnier pledged to reduce public spending and introduce a more \u201ceffective\u201d public spending scheme.<\/p>\n

He also called for an additional tax effort, under which large and very large companies that make significant profits should contribute more \u201cwithout compromising the competitiveness\u201d of France.<\/p>\n

The wealthiest French people will also be targeted for an \u201cexceptional contribution,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Following the murder of a young student by an illegal immigrant who was supposed to be deported from France, Barnier acknowledged in the National Assembly that France\u2019s migration and integration policies are no longer managed \u201cin a satisfactory way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Barnier said that his government would consider tightening visa issuance for countries that are reluctant to issue laissez-passers to repatriate their deported nationals.<\/p>\n

In addition, he proposed measures to facilitate the exceptional extension of the detention for undocumented migrants waiting to be deported, and to improve the enforcement of obligations to leave French territory (OQTF).<\/p>\n

Barnier also announced policies on energy, accommodation and possible further reform on retirement.<\/p>\n

Speaking to the more than ever divided lower house, Barnier promised to govern France with a \u201cnew method\u201d that involves \u201clistening, respect and dialogue.\u201d<\/p>\n

Being a prime minister without the absolute majority in the National Assembly, Barnier called on the opposition to make \u201cdialogue and the culture of compromise\u201d a governing principle.<\/p>\n
