Novak Djokovic said Wednesday that he hoped current world number one Jannik Sinner\u2019s steroid case would be \u201cresolved as soon as possible\u201d, as he again bemoaned the tennis anti-doping system\u2019s \u201cinconsistencies\u201d.<\/p>\n
Sinner failed two doping tests in March but was cleared of wrongdoing and allowed to keep playing by tennis authorities.<\/p>\n
But the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) said Saturday it had mounted an appeal, and was seeking a ban of up to two years.<\/p>\n
Djokovic had previously said he could \u201cunderstand the sentiments of a lot of players\u201d who were questioning whether Sinner\u2019s rank had protected him.<\/p>\n
On Wednesday, speaking at a press conference at the Shanghai Masters, the former world number one acknowledged it must be \u201cvery tough\u201d for the Italian.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think it\u2019s quite obvious that we have a system that is not working well\u2026 There\u2019s way too many inconsistencies, way too many governing bodies involved and, you know, just this whole case is not helping our sport at all,\u201d the 37-year-old said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhatever is going to happen at the end of the day, just I wish for it to be resolved as soon as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n
Tennis authorities accepted Sinner\u2019s explanation that trace amounts of a steroid unintentionally entered his system from a physiotherapist who used a spray containing it to treat a cut, then provided massage and sports therapy to the player.<\/p>\n
The WADA appeal has reignited the case, with Sinner saying he has had sleepless nights over the issue.<\/p>\n
The 23-year-old has pushed through the controversy to win the US Open, as well as progressed to the final of the China Open, facing world number three Carlos Alcaraz.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s impressive what (Sinner\u2019s) been doing in the whole process of what\u2019s been happening, that he\u2019s playing on such a high level,\u201d Djokovic said.<\/p>\n
Both Sinner and Alcaraz will also head to Shanghai for the Masters, where they and Djokovic are among the favourites.<\/p>\n
The Serbian is aiming for a 100th singles title \u2014 which he said was \u201cextra motivation\u201d \u2014 but admitted he had \u201csome catching up to do\u201d as he hadn\u2019t played many tournaments recently.<\/p>\n
\u201cHopefully I can use that freshness in a way, and also the past experiences and success I had,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Djokovic is a four-time champion in Shanghai, but has not played there for five years.<\/p>\n
Asked what the secret to his previous success was, he laughed: \u201cI love dumplings and the Chinese language, I think that helps!\u201d<\/p>\n
