{"id":98862,"date":"2024-10-10T10:03:09","date_gmt":"2024-10-10T10:03:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/index.php\/2024\/10\/10\/kenya-on-track-to-meet-the-european-union-deforestation-regulation-compliance\/"},"modified":"2024-10-10T10:03:09","modified_gmt":"2024-10-10T10:03:09","slug":"kenya-on-track-to-meet-the-european-union-deforestation-regulation-compliance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/kenya-on-track-to-meet-the-european-union-deforestation-regulation-compliance\/","title":{"rendered":"Kenya on track to meet the European Union Deforestation Regulation compliance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0government\u00a0has assured\u00a0coffee growers, value chain actors, operators, and buyers that Kenya is on track to meet the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) compliance.<\/p>\n<p>Agriculture and Livestock Development Cabinet Secretary (CS)\u00a0Dr. Andrew\u00a0Karanja explained that\u00a0the\u00a0European Union Parliament passed legislative measures on May 3, 2023, aimed at reducing EU-driven deforestation and forest degradation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe EUDR\u00a0mandates that certain commodities, including coffee, linked to deforestation must not be placed on or exported to the EU market after December 30, 2024,\u201d said Dr. Karanja.<\/p>\n<p>He disclosed that the EU accounts for 55% of Kenya\u2019s coffee exports, making compliance with these regulations essential to the success of Kenya\u2019s coffee subsector.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA\u00a0Cabinet\u00a0Memo is being prepared to keep the\u00a0Cabinet informed on Kenya\u2019s progress towards EUDR compliance,\u201d said Dr. Karanja adding that a\u00a0Multi-Agency Technical Committe of experts has been formed to evaluate Kenya\u2019s readiness and develop a comprehensive compliance framework.<\/p>\n<p>The CS explained that\u00a0Ground-Truthing Tests\u00a0have been conducted to assess the current status of compliance\u00a0and the government\u2019s request for\u00a0EU Technical support\u00a0to verify compliance\u00a0has been\u00a0approved by the European Commission.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough there have been unconfirmed reports suggesting a potential extension of the EUDR compliance deadline to December 2025, the\u00a0government remains steadfast in adhering to its current schedule. Early compliance is critical to securing Kenya\u2019s position in the EU market and maintaining trust with our trading partners,\u201d said Dr. Karanja.<\/p>\n<p>He highlighted that\u00a0the\u00a0ministry emphasizes the need for compliance with the Data Protection Act, 2019\u00a0and unauthorized entities are strictly prohibited from collecting, analyzing, or storing grower information under the guise of assisting with compliance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Ministry clarifies that the Due Diligence Statement, as required by the EUDR, will be issued by the competent government agencies. Meanwhile, all grower data will be securely managed under the Kenya Integrated Agricultural Management Information System (KIAMIS) by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development,\u201d said Dr. Karanja.<\/p>\n<p>The European Commission through a statement on their website indicate that given feedback received from international partners about their state of preparations, they have proposed to give concerned parties additional time to prepare.<\/p>\n<p>The statement indicates that if approved by the European Parliament and the Council, the additional time would\u00a0make the law\u00a0applicable on\u00a030 December 2025 for large companies and 30 June 2026 for micro- and small enterprises.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince all the implementation tools are technically ready, the extra 12 months can serve as a\u00a0phasing-in period to ensure proper and effective implementation,\u201d read the statement in part.<\/p>\n<p>The statement further read that the Commission recognises that three months ahead of the intended implementation date, several\u00a0global partners have repeatedly\u00a0expressed concerns about their state of preparedness, most recently during the United Nations General Assembly week in New York.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoreover, the state of preparations amongst stakeholders in Europe is also uneven.
