{"id":99200,"date":"2024-10-14T15:03:18","date_gmt":"2024-10-14T15:03:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/index.php\/2024\/10\/14\/mutai-survives-senate-impeachment-trial-thanks-to-unmet-threshold\/"},"modified":"2024-10-14T15:03:18","modified_gmt":"2024-10-14T15:03:18","slug":"mutai-survives-senate-impeachment-trial-thanks-to-unmet-threshold","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chezaspin.com\/blog\/mutai-survives-senate-impeachment-trial-thanks-to-unmet-threshold\/","title":{"rendered":"Mutai survives Senate impeachment trial thanks to unmet threshold"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 14 \u2014 Beleaguared Kericho Governor Eric Mutai has survived an impeachment motion due procedural technicalities linked to an unmet threshold.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Senators threw out the impeachment motion citing that Kericho Members of County Assembly\u2019s failure to meet the two-thirds threshold to remove him from office.<\/p>\n<p>Speaker Amason Kingi ordered a vote on the matter after he declined to make a ruling citing the implications a decision on the matter would have on the impeachment trial.<\/p>\n<p>A makority of Senators supported the preliminary objection where 34 MCAs voted in support of the objection while 14 voted against the objection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe motion having been approved the hearing proceedings on proposed removal from office by impeachment of Erick Mutai, the govenor of Kericho county is hereby terminated,\u201d Kingi decalared.<\/p>\n<p>The vote followed lawyer Katwa Kigen\u2019s presentation that the 31 MCAs who voted for Mutai\u2019s impeachment fell short of the threshold computed at 31.3 MCAs.<\/p>\n<p>Kigen argued that the figure could only be rounded off upwards to 32 while the County Assembly defended its decision to round off the figure to the nearest whole number being 31.<\/p>\n<p><em>More to follow\u2026<\/em><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 14 \u2014 Beleaguared Kericho Governor Eric Mutai has survived an impeachment motion due procedural technicalities linked to an unmet threshold.
