To meet the\u00a0<\/span>2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development<\/span><\/a>, the UN General Assembly President on Monday emphasised Africa\u2019s potential and the urgent need for both international support and systemic reforms across the continent.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

In a speech delivered during a debate on African development, Assembly\u202f\u00a0President\u00a0<\/a>Phil\u00e9mon Yang addressed the continent\u2019s progress toward the\u00a0Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)<\/a>\u00a0and the African Union\u2019s (AU) related framework, known as Agenda 2063.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere has never been a better time to accelerate progress towards peace, prosperity and sustainable development,\u201d he stated.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Special challenges<\/strong><\/div>\n
Yang highlighted the recent adoption of the Pact for the Future which acknowledges the special challenges faced by the most vulnerable countries, in particular African States, in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He stressed that despite Africa\u2019s vast energy and agricultural resources, many nations suffer from electricity deficits and food insecurity.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Moreover, debt distress and the unjust global financial system have exacerbated Africa\u2019s financial pressures, resulting in a development financing gap of $1.6 trillion.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He called for a more just financial system, expressing that the current system \u201cprioritises high interest rates and debt servicing over investments in resilience and social services.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The continent will need about $194 billion in additional financing annually to achieve the SDGs.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Call for global support<\/strong><\/div>\n
While acknowledging the bleak economic outlook, Yang also praised Africa\u2019s resilience as economic growth in sub-Saharan Africa is projected to increase from 2.6 percent in 2023 to 3.8 percent by 2025.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He urged the global community to help transform Africa\u2019s \u201cuntapped ingenuity\u201d into solid foundations for inclusive growth, emphasising that the continent\u2019s growing working-age population could be a major driver of transformative change.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cWith more effective financial management, stronger domestic resource mobilisation and better use of debate as a development tool, African economies can fortify and sustain their growth,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n

Peace and political solutions<\/strong><\/div>\n
Furthermore, Yang underlined the importance of peace and political solutions to conflicts, especially in countries such as Sudan and Somalia. He called for legal and societal reforms to address systemic barriers to justice and inequality, noting that \u201cpromoting peace and advancing the rule of law in Africa demands a comprehensive strategy.\u201d<\/div>\n

He concluded by pledging to keep Africa\u2019s development at the forefront of the General Assembly\u2019s agenda, stressing that \u201cAfrica must continue to rise\u201d in its pursuit of a peaceful and prosperous future.<\/div>\n
