2 pupils drown in Eldoret flash floods, bodies recovered near State Lodge

NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 20 — Two pupils from Eldoret’s Central Primary School drowned on Monday following flash floods in the area.

A police report filed on Tuesday indicated the pupils aged thirteen and five were swept away by flash floods upon reaching Kapsoya Primary School bridge.

The students, one in Grade IV and the other in Grade I, were on their way home from school when tragedy struck.

“A multi-agency team comprising the Uasin Gishu Fire Marshals, the police, and Lochab rescue team recovered the bodies near state lodge 800 Meters from the initial scene,” the police stated.

The police moved the bodies to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) mortuary for autopsy to validate the circumstances of the deaths.

The incident comes when most of the country was experiencing generally hot and dry conditions with the Meteorological Department urging Kenyans to hydrate.

The agency has however protected isolated rainfall in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and North-western Kenya.

A few areas in the South Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, South-eastern lowlands, the Coast, and North-eastern Kenya are forecast to receive light to moderate rainfall.
