NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 23 — Nakuru detectives on Saturday impounded 560 bags of a suspected fake fertilizer consignment delivered to Molo National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) stores with a street value of Sh1.4 million.
The seizure came hours after a multi-agency team comprising DCIO Molo, CIPU Commander Molo, ACC Central, officers from KEPHIS, and Anti-Counterfeit Agency visited the depot to inspect the fertilizers on an intelligence-led operation.
The fertilizer originating from Kel Chemicals Limited Thika and transported by MEMS distributors was originally scheduled for delivery a day earlier according to a preliminary probe.
The NCPB Agriculture Value Chain Vouchering online system however indicated the delivery schedule was canceled at 9:47pm.
Reports indicated Agriculture and Livestock Principal Secretary Paul Ronoh canceled the delivery over standards concerns.
In a directive on March 20, PS Ronoh indicated that the fertilizer in question did not meet the required standards.
“Surprisingly, another consignment of 560 bags of fertilizer also from Kel Chemicals was delivered to Molo NCPB while using a trailer Reg No KAZ 082B ZE6515,” read a police report obtained by Capital News.
Crime Scene Investigations team from Nakuru processed the scene and handed the seized fertilizer to Molo DCI officers for custody.
Police detained a suspected Joseph Mbote pending arraignment in court.
