Kenyan disability champion nominated for global peace award

Hamisa Zaja, the Executive Director of Coast Association for Persons Living With Disability has put Kenya on the global map after being nominated for the Women Building Peace Award set to take place in Washington DC.

The Mombasa based activist was recognised by the US Institute of Peace (USIP) for her work in empowering youth, women and persons living with disability.

The Women Building Peace Award is given each year to a woman peacebuilder who has made a major contribution to the pursuit of peace and security in her country

Speaking at the Moi International Airport in Mombasa before her departure, an elated Zaja dedicated the award to Kenyan peace-builders, women and especially persons with disability.

She will be feted at the USIP headquarters, on the March 1, the first day of Women’s History Month, and ahead of the International Women Day.

Zaja has been very instrumental in fighting for the rights of the marginalized especially persons living with disabilities in Mombasa county.

She started her peace-building venture in 2005 when she delved into the world of empowerment.

She has been celebrated for building a resource center in Majengo, Mvita sub county that annually churns out more than 1,500 youth, women and persons living with disability with empowerment.
