Kindiki puts Kisii and Nyamira security chiefs on notice over violence, calls for political restraint

NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 1-The government has made personnel changes and initiated investigations in response to a surge in violent criminal activities in Kisii County.

Kisii County has experienced a wave of violence, with factions from both sides of the political divide accusing each other of sponsoring criminal acts.

Interior Cabinet secretary Kithure Kindiki said Friday that a special team has been deployed to investigate and bring to account, organisers, financiers, and perpetrators of crime in parts of the county.

Speaking when he met senior security officials from Kisii and Nyamira counties, Kindiki called on security agents to prioritise preventive security and enforce the law with firmness.

“It is the policy of this administration to depoliticize security management and law enforcement. Our security officers and administrators must remain impartial,” he insisted.

Kindiki also emphasized that political competition should not be a pretext for promoting violence.

“While political competition is lawful and constitutional, the use of violence as a means of conducting political competition is illegal and intolerable.”

The Interior CS disclosed that the Government has taken steps to strengthen law enforcement to ensure the safety and security of every part of Kenya.

He revealed that security managers across the country have been given performance targets to meet, with periodic reviews to ensure continuous improvement in service delivery.

Additionally, in Nyamira Town, Kindiki conducted a routine security performance review meeting with County, Sub-County, and Divisional security heads from various agencies in Nyamira County.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to reducing incidents of violence of all kinds, including homicide, family violence, and substance abuse.
