KWS Locates Body of Porter Missing Since December on Mount Kenya Trek

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 10 – The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has located the body of porter Samuel Macharia Wanjohi, who went missing on December 23, while trekking along Mount Kenya’s Sirimon–Shipton route.

KWS confirmed that Wanjohi’s body was found in the Hinde Valley, at an altitude of approximately 4,300 metres above sea level.

Upon receiving the missing person report, KWS immediately activated its Mountain Search and Rescue Unit and lodged a formal report at Chogoria Police Station.

The multi-agency search involved experienced rangers, mountain guides, and porters, supported by aerial surveillance and extensive ground patrols.

The operation covered key locations including Shipton Camp, Austrian Hut, Mackinder’s Valley, Sendeyo, Mintos, Timau Route, and surrounding areas.

Despite facing extreme weather, poor visibility, and challenging terrain, the coordinated effort of KWS, the National Police Service, and the mountain community ensured the eventual retrieval of Mr. Wanjohi. KWS credited the resilience, courage, and solidarity of all involved in the search.

KWS expressed deep condolences to Mr. Wanjohi’s family, friends, fellow porters, guides, and the broader Mt. Kenya mountain community.

The agency reiterated its commitment to visitor safety, emergency preparedness, and strengthened mountain rescue operations.

“This tragic incident highlights the risks of high-altitude trekking and underscores the importance of vigilance and safety measures on Kenya’s mountains,” KWS said.
