Mbadi Emerges as Key Treasury Figure, Analysts Question: Is He Tipped for Bigger Political Role?

KISII, Kenya Apr 1 – KISII, Kenya Apr 1 – John Mbadi is increasingly emerging as a central figure in Kenya’s economic management, with his leadership at the National Treasury of Kenya drawing growing attention from both policy experts and political observers.

Mbadi, a longtime ally of Raila Odinga, made history as the first individual from Luo Nyanza to head the powerful Treasury docket—marking a significant milestone in Kenya’s evolving political landscape.

Political analyst Dismus Mokua attributes Mbadi’s performance to his extensive leadership experience across both party politics and government.

“Mbadi has fostered a consultative leadership style, incorporating technical officers into policy formulation and execution. This approach has helped shape decisions on fiscal management and public spending,” said Mokua.

According to the analyst, Mbadi is also credited with promoting a more balanced distribution of national resources, with increased focus on historically underserved regions.

Mbadi’s tenure comes at a critical time when Kenya has faced mounting economic pressures, including rising cost of living, taxation concerns and youth-led protests, particularly by Gen Z.

Despite the turbulence, his role at the Treasury has been seen as instrumental in stabilizing the country’s economic direction and restoring a degree of fiscal discipline.

Mbadi’s rising influence is now fueling political speculation, with some quarters suggesting he could be considered for a higher national role.

Analysts point to the possibility of him emerging as a potential running mate to William Ruto, particularly if a coalition arrangement materializes between the ruling side and the Orange Democratic Movement under a broader political framework.

Mokua argues that Mbadi’s economic expertise could complement President Ruto’s political strategy, especially as the administration seeks to navigate fiscal challenges and rebuild public confidence.

While no official political moves have been announced, analysts say Mbadi’s growing profile signals an expanding role beyond the Treasury.

“No political moves have been announced, but Mbadi’s rising profile signals his expanding role both within government and in Kenya’s evolving political dynamics,” Mokua added.

As Kenya grapples with economic recovery and political realignments, John Mbadi is steadily positioning himself as both a key technocrat and a potential political heavyweight—making him one of the most closely watched figures in the country today.
