Police issue alert over flooding, several roads in Nairobi closed

The Traffic Department has announced the closure of Moi Avenue after two trees fell next to Imenti house blocking the busy road.

The trees were uprooted by gusty winds that accompanied the rainstorm experienced through Tuesday night.

Other roads closed include Kibiko Road in Ngong. The ongoing rainfall being experienced in Nairobi has resulted in flooding.

Nairobi County response team is already on-site to clear the road.

In the alert issued to motorists, drivers have been asked to avoid Lunga Lunga Road around KPLC Depot, Kahawa Sukari Road, Limuru Road, Kamiti Road and Lower Kabete Road around Red Hill area.

Motorists have also been urged to observe caution while on the road and avoid driving through flooded areas to avoid accidents.

Meanwhile, Kenya Red Cross has dispatched a team to conduct an assessment following the heavy downpours Tuesday night.

“After heavy downpours in various parts of Nairobi last night, our Nairobi Red Cross Branch team has been dispatched to conduct assessments in most of the affected areas and, if needed, initiate search and rescue operations” KRCS said on X.

Motorists have been advised to keep off flooded roads.

“Even if your route isn’t listed here, be aware of the possibility of flooding and fallen debris on other roads. Adjust your speed and drive cautiously in wet conditions. If you encounter flooding, do not attempt to drive through it. Find an alternate route”, police have cautioned.
