Kakamega High School’s “Green Commandos” are the 2026 KSSSA Boys’ Football champions after edging St Mary’s School Yala 3-2 after extra time in a thrilling final at the M-Pesa Foundation Academy, lifting their 13th national title and reclaiming the crown they last won in 2018.
The victory capped a remarkable return to the top for Kakamega, who were back at the national championships for the first time in eight years after a long absence from the competition.
Coach Edwin Luche’s side battled through a competitive campaign in Thika, overcoming Menengai High School 2-1 in extra time in the semi-final courtesy of a late winner from Daniel Ombati, before completing the job against St Mary’s Yala in an even more dramatic finale.
St Mary’s Yala, the Nyanza representatives dubbed the “Black Saints,” had reached the final unbeaten in the knockout stages, beating Takaba Mixed Senior School 2-0 in their semi-final.
Backed by head coach Kevin Oluoch, the Siaya County side pushed Kakamega all the way in a final billed beforehand as the “Schools Mashemeji Derby,” given comparisons drawn between the two footballing institutions and Kenyan Premier League rivals Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards.
The result extends Kakamega’s status as the most decorated school in KSSSA football history, with the win coming after coach Luche, who joined the school in 2024, was tasked with restoring the Green Commandos to national prominence.
For St Mary’s Yala, the defeat ends a strong campaign that had already secured the school’s qualification for the East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association Games, offering some consolation despite missing out on the national crown.
Kakamega’s triumph adds another chapter to a footballing legacy dating back to the late 1970s, when the school launched one of the most successful dynasties in Kenyan school sports history.
