Reigning African champion Anatasha Cheptoo, and teammate Mercy Chepngeno have one primary goal in Oregon this Thursday: reclaiming the global 3000m steeplechase title last won by Olympic and World champion Faith Cherotich in Cali, Colombia, in 2022.
Both athletes qualified for today’s final in Tuesday’s round 1, Chepngeno dominated her Heat from the start, while Cheptoo overcame a mishap at a water jump to recover and finish second in Heat 2.
Following their successful qualification, the duo has pledged to use a collaborative strategy to ensure Kenya secures two medals.
The women’s final is scheduled for 7:42 p.m. local time, followed by the men’s 3,000m final at 8:25 p.m., where Elkana Sanutia and Emmanuel Kiprono will represent the country.
In addition to the finals, Marion Jepchumba who is the sole competitor in the two lap race following Nancy Jepng’etich’disqualification will be action in the semi final starting 6:45pm.
Nahashon Pkiach and Collins Tajewou will also compete in the men’s semifinals for a spot in Saturday’s final.
