The fight for this year’s SportPesa National Sevens Circuit title is far from settled, and it only gets tougher from here. The action now moves to Nairobi for the Kabeberi 7s, round three of the six-leg series, set for August 15–16 at the RFUEA Grounds.
It’s been a rollercoaster start to the season for the circuit’s two biggest rivals. KCB opened with a statement, holding their nerve in a tense final against Kabras Sugar to win the Prinsloo 7s in Nakuru back in July. It looked like business as usual for the reigning champions.
But Kabras hit back hard. Still stinging from that Prinsloo defeat, they turned up in Kisumu for the Dala 7s a different side altogether, tighter, hungrier, and far more ruthless in the big moments.
They cruised through to the final and put on a near-flawless display to lift the title, a result that pushed them past KCB and into pole position on the overall standings.
KCB, meanwhile, will want to forget Kisumu in a hurry. Their title defence unravelled in the quarter-finals, undone by discipline problems that saw them reduced to a handful of players and knocked out before the business end of the tournament.
So the stage is set for a heavyweight rematch. The two sides have been drawn together again, this time in what’s already being called the toughest group of the tournament, alongside two sides capable of springing an upset of their own.
Behind all the drama on the pitch, the circuit keeps rolling on the strength of its backers. SportPesa as title sponsor, with Tusker and KCB Bank continuing their long association with the domestic game.
Three rounds remain after Nairobi, and with the top two so evenly matched, the overall title race looks set to go down to the wire.
